This thesis is to see the possibility of applying "Game Theory" to Taekwondo fighting, particularly to the competition. The Game Theory has been used mainly in such areas as economics, military studies, and other fields where researchers deal with any competitive or strategic situations.
In economics, this theory is useful to the analysis of the oligopolistic market which is a representative case of competitive or strategic situation. As for the military area, this has been used for war games in which researchers preestimate which state will win a victory in any possible wars.
The Taekwondo competition, as we all know, is another representative case of competitive or strategic situation that is a zero-sum game in which one should be a loser and the other a winner.
Therefore, I, as a researcher who has been searching for the possibility to rationally predict the result of Taekwondo competition over decades, finally decided to employ this theory.
The result of studying in this thesis shows this approach can be relevant to the Taekwondo games.
By manually analysing game matrix boxes, we can confirm this fact. However, in order to analyse all related factors around Taekwondo games, which are sometimes difficult to measure, and actually predict the games" results, we need to do some computer simulation approach like they do for war games.
The reason why I don"t attempt the simulation approach is that this thesis is the very first one applying the Carre Theory to Taekwondo and what I intended was, as the title shows, to confirm whether it"s possible to use Carre Theory in analysing Taekwondo competition Therefore, I expect many Taekwondo experts, who are well versed in computer programming as well, to conduct the computer simulation approach in order to analyse Taekwondo fighting.
As the conclusion shows, in real fighting or so-called "Street Fighting", which I analysed to compare to the competition, "Tit-for-Tat" is the optimal strategy as proven by a political analyst, Robert Axelrod. As for the Taekwondo competition, the same strategy is also optimal. However, in this case, because there are not many social, institutional, and legal factors to be considered, the Tie-for-Tat should be interpreted as a situational approach, a pure technical one. What this result indicates is that, in real fighting, the integrities of martial artists" are essential not only because it"s the idea of oriental martial arts but because it"s the best strategy to be a top-notch martial artist and, in the competition, competitors shouldn"t be totally depend upon their special techniques that are usually well known to other competitors but try to acquire new techniques constantly.
This means the more ferrous they are, the more various their techniques should be.
That this result is relevant is crystal-clear in light of my personal experience, Therefore, we can predict the result of any Taekwondo games and can be better prepared with weak points of competitors corrected or their strong points strengthened. For this, Taekwondo educators, especially those involved in Taekwondo competitions, must study this theory and apply this to their teaching. However, this demands them to be well versed in computer programming, which is pretty tough. Without much investment of time and money, this is impossible. Therefore, for the sake of this subject"s development, a public research fund or subsidy from the government or school authorities is necessary.
