This paper is concerned with identifying the differences of manufacturing strategies between samll-medium firms and large firms, so that I will propose a strategic means by which the executives of small-medium business in industry can characterize and evaluate strategic choice in manufacturing for competitive to achieve competitive advantage. In this study of the manufacturing strategies, I first analyzed the types of competitions(competition strategic groups) in business(small-medium firms and large firms) according to the competitive strategic factors. Second I analyzed the strategic task groups of manufacturings, then evaluated the fitness between competitive stategies and manufacturing tasks according to the strategic matrix which are composed of competitive strategic groups and strategic task groups for each categories. Data were gathered from field study in electric and electronic industry. Some findings are followings. 1. The scale of firms and the degree of competition in industry have little influences on economic performance of firms. 2. There are difference in economic performance of firms across the types of manufacturing systems between small-medium firms and large firms. In small-medium business, flexibility to product specification changes and volume changes(such as lower volum, higher product variety) is more beneficial, while to large firms the abilities in achieve lower cost (such as higher volume, lower product variety) are more beneficial for competitive advantage. 3. There are no significant difference in competitive performance of business unit across the competitive strategic group of the small-medium firms and large firms. The research shows that firms which focus on the set of homogeneous competitive dimension outperform than others. 4. The empirical results show where competitive strategy of business unit and manufacturing strategy are congruent will out perform than those in which are mismatched. 5. In general they accept that the competition forces of small-medium firms are lower than those of larger firms. But the result shows that the performance of the small-medium firms, whose competitive strategies and manufacturing tasks are well matched, are more higher than the larger firms those in which are mismatched. Hence for small-medium firms to get competitive advantage, they must manage their production system in terms of strategic dimensions. 6. From the findings of this study, the competitive advantage of firms does not depend on firms scale or the degree of competition, but where how in compete through manufacturing capabilities.
