We examine the influence of parameters on the Free Electron Later (FEL) performance for the proposed FEL amplifier test experiment (FATE) type by using the numerical simulation codes ELFIN and GINGER and by using theory. Achievable values for the normalized emittance and the peak current, as well as the availability of sensitive detectors for FEL radiation, establish the boundaries for the design of the system. This study focuses on an optical wavelength range of 2 to 3μm using a 6- to 8-m-long-wiggler with a 2.5- to 4.2cm period and is based on the FATE type parameters to optimize the radiation wavelength, the current, the bunch length, the wiggler period, the energy spread, and the beta function for FEL performance. The optimization is numerically demonstrated with the three-demensional code ELFIN, and the results are compared with those from the time dependent code GINGER and from theory.
