learning to write in a second language is a critical part of the acquisition of a second language, just as important as reading and speaking abilities. However, little attention has been paid to the importance of writing in acquiring a second language in English education in Korea. This paper puts forth the need for further research on writing, especially writing for early English language learners. The review of literature articulates issues regarding second language writing, including the place of writing in second language acquisition (SLA) theories and children's learning to write in a second language. In an attempt to confirm the effectiveness of writing engagement in learning English, this case study uses both quantitative and qualitative methods to explore the pivotal roles of writing engagement in promoting learning of content. The findings that writing could serve as an efficient way to learn content as well as language acknowledge the importance of incorporating writing into English language learning, while calling for a closer examination of the writing curriculum and instruction for English language learners.
