This study aims at identifying the features of teacher talk which a native English speaker uses when teaching English in a primary school. The analysis is focused on: (1) comparing the simplification of the teacher's speech used in three classes of different English proficiency, (2) identifying the features of frequently used words by comparing the teacher's speech with natural English, and (3) finding simplification techniques frequently used across the three groups. The results were as follows. Simplification appears to be more apparent in the lower levels. The speed of speech, lexical variety, sentence length and frequency of conjunctions, and frequency of pronouns appear to be lower in the lower level than in the higher one. Next, the frequently used words in the teacher's speech are decided not only by the proficiency level of the learners, but also by the topic and activity in the class. Finally, the frequently used simplification techniques are: comprehension checks, paraphrasing, easy words, incomplete interrogatives, repetition, acting, translation, real objects, and onomatopoeia. It should be added that when teaching a group of children who have higher English proficiency the teacher used more elaborative sentences rather than simple and short ones.
