영문 초록

This paper discusses key theoretical assumptions about language and learning in the work of two scholars, Vygotsky (1978, 1986) and Bakhtin (1981, 1986) and will also outline key points in the work of another two scholars who have explicated and built on Vygotsky’s and Bakhtin’s work to develop their own theories: Wertsch (1985, 1991, 1998) and Cole (1996). In addition, some implications will be drawn based on the work of the above scholars for the study of adult second language writing. Implications fall into three main areas: 1) Study strategies for L2 college writers; 2) Helping L2 graduate students studying abroad to meet the challenge of academic writing; 3) Using Internet resources to promote learning through social interaction. This article ends with a calling for more research into the theories of Bakhtin, Vygotsky, Wertsch, Cole and other sociocultural theorists which specifically consider second language learning against a backdrop of adult writing instruction, as similar research on their theories in this field appears rare.
