초･중등학교 학생의 가치와 학업 변인 간 관계 탐색

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 초등학생과 중･고등학생들이 중요시하는 가치가 무엇인지 탐색하고 이 시기 학생들의 학업 관련 변인 및 성취에 어떠한 역할을 하는지 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 초등학교 학생 403명, 중등학교 학생 540명을 대상으로 자기보고식 설문을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 주요 변인들에 대한 기술통계, 상관분석과 더불어 초등 및 중등학교 학생 간 비교를 위하여 독립표본 t-검증을 실시하였고, 가치가 학업 관련 주요 변인들을 어떻게 예측하는지 알아보기 위해 중다회귀분석을 실시하였다. 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 초등 및 중등학교 학생들의 가치 우선순위는 개방성, 자기초월, 보수주의, 자기고양의 순으로 동일하게 나타났다. 둘째, 초등 및 중등학교 학생들 모두에게서 긍정적인 학업 관련 변인을 개방성 상위가치는 정적으로 예측한 반면 자기고양 상위가치는 부적으로 예측하는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 개방성 상위가치에 속하는 자기주도-사고 가치가 높을수록 학업 관련 변인도 일관되게 긍정적으로 나타났다. 셋째, 초등학교 학생들에 비해서 중등학교 학생들의 경우 자기주도-행동 가치가 학업 관련 변인을 정적으로 예측하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 통해 초･중등학생들이 자신의 삶에서 중요하게 여기는 가치가 이들의 학업에서도 의미 있는 역할을 하고 있음을 시사하였다. 또한, 교육 현장에서는 학생들의 학업 증진을 위해 이들이 개방적이고 자기주도적인 가치를 함양할 수 있도록 도와주어야 하며, 학생들의 발달 단계에 따라 학업에 도움이 될 수 있는 가치가 달라질 수 있음을 인식할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the values that primary and secondary school students consider important and to examine the role of academic variables and achievements of students during this period. For this purpose, data were collected through a self-reported questionnaire from primary (n=403) and secondary (n=540) school students. To analyze the primary variables, descriptive statistics and correlational analyses were conducted, and an independent sample t-test was utilized to compare primary and secondary school students while a multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine how values predict key academic-related variables. The main findings are as follows. First, the prioritized values for primary and secondary students appeared in the order of openness, self-transcendence, conservation, and self-enhancement. Second, while openness as a higher-order value positively predicted favorably academic variables for primary and secondary school students, self-enhancement was found to negatively predict them. In particular, the higher the self-determination-thought value as a sub-values of openness, the more consistently positive the academic variables were. Third, self-determination-action was found to more positively predict academic variables for secondary students than for primary students. These results suggest that primary and secondary school students’ values that they consider important in their lives play a meaningful role in their academic pursuits. Furthermore, in educational settings, efforts should be made to foster the values of students’ openness and self-determination to enhance their academic performance, and it is important to recognize that the values helpful for academic achievement may vary depending on students’ developmental stages.
