국문 초록

본 연구에서는 대표적인 여성 관객 주도시장인 뮤지컬 시장에서 남성 관객은 어떠한 경험을 하는지 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 13명의 남성 뮤지컬 관객과의 개인 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 우선 이들이 본격적인 뮤지컬 관객이 된 결정적 계기는 뮤지컬을 좋아하는 여자친구를 만나게 된 것이었다. 첫 관람의 감동은 이들을 본격적인 뮤지컬 관객으로 이끌었지만, 이들이 맞닥트린 비용과 정보라는 현실적인 부담과 제약은 뮤지컬을 고급문화로 인식하는 요인으로 작동하고 있었다. 특히 술과 게임으로 상징되는 전형적인 남성 놀이문화와 뮤지컬은 여성적 장르라는 선입견으로 인해 주변의 동성 또래 집단으로부터 취향에 대한 지지를 받지 못하고 있었다. 또한 엄격한 관극 방식, 공연장에서 느껴지는 시선과 작품 및 홍보 방식 등에서 ‘남성’으로서 일종의 소외감과 불편함을 체감하지만, 뮤지컬은 원래 여성 친화적 장르라는 생각으로 수용하고 있었다. 마지막으로 연구 참여자들은 지루하고 피곤한 일상에서 뮤지컬을 하나의 탈출구이자 돌파구로 여기고 있었으며 나아가 뮤지컬 작품의 주인공 서사와 음악에서 위로받고 새로운 자신을 발견하면서 여가활동 그 이상의 의미를 부여하고 있었다.

영문 초록

This study focuses on the lack of attention paid to male audiences in the Korean performing arts market due to the skewed gender ratio of audiences, and interviews 13 male audiences about their musical watching experiences. First of all, the decisive factor for most of the study participants to become a full-fledged musical audience was meeting a girlfriend who liked musicals. However, the practical burdens and constraints they faced in terms of cost and information contributed to their perception of musicals as high culture. They did not receive support for their taste from their same-sex peers due to the stereotypical male play culture symbolized by alcohol and games, and the preconceived notion that musicals are a feminine genre. They also experienced a sense of alienation and discomfort as a "man" due to the strict theatrical style, the way they were looked at in the theater, and the way they were produced and promoted, but they accepted the idea that musicals are a female-friendly genre. Lastly, the participants in the study considered musicals as an escape and a breakthrough from their boring and tiring daily lives, and furthermore, they found comfort in the main narrative and music of musicals and discovered a new self, giving them a meaning beyond leisure activities.
