국문 초록

이 연구는 ‘다문화’라는 표제 및 소개어가 담긴 어린이 도서를 분석함으로써 어떠한 유형의 서적들이 ‘다문화 서적’으로 출판되고 있으며 어떠한 특징을 보이는지를 살펴보았다. 서울시립어린이도서관과 국립어린이청소년 도서관이 비치하고 있는 325권의 서적이 본 연구에서 분석되었는데, 연구 결과, ‘다문화’라는 용어를 포함하고는 있지만 다른 나라의 전반적 특징을 소개하는 데 그치는 서적, 과거의 이야기인 전래동화, 한국어 동사 및 명사 등 명칭을 익히기 위하여 기획되거나 각 교과목의 주요 용어를 소개하는 데 그치는 학습서 등 다문화교육과 다소 거리가 있는 서적이 70%를 넘었다. 현재 한국사회의 이주민이 일상생활에서 겪는 어려움, 인종, 민족, 차별, 편견, 정체성 등 다양한 다문화교육 관련 주제를 직접적으로 다루고 있는 현대물 픽션과 어린이 인문·사회서적 역시 캐릭터가 다소 단순하고, 이주민의 희생을 강조하는 것으로 비추어질 수 있는 내용이 포함되어 있으며, 관용 및 화합 중심의 ‘안전한’ 주제 및 내용을 넘어서지 못하는 점 등 다수의 결점이 발견되었다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed multicultural books for children to identify the types of multicultural books for children are published and the characteristics they have in common. The samples analyzed are 325 multicultural books for children in Children's Public Library of Seoul and National Library for Children and Young Adults. The findings showed that there were many different types of multicultural books published for children audiences including information books, folk tales, social issues books, study books and so on. Yet, over 70 percent of the books did not discuss the problems and difficulties that today's immigrant workers and international marriage couples face everyday. Even books that discuss issues related to multiculturalism or multicultural education focused only on general issues such as tolerance and harmony between immigrants and native South Koreans rather than problematizing sensitive issues such as illegal immigrants. Many also showed possibilities of creating and perpetuating prejudice and stereotypes about immigrants as less smart, less desirable, and less able.
