국문 초록

최근 이민자 등 에스닉 집단에 대한 편견이 담긴 이미지를 재현하는 미디어의 보도 경향이 문제점으로 지적되고 있다. 특히 학생들은 주로 미디어를 통해 이주민에 대한 정보를 접하기 때문에 편견적 메시지가 담긴 미디어에 취약한 상황이다. 따라서 미디어 속에 담긴 편견적 메시지를 비판할 수 있는 능력을 길러주기 위한 교육적 경험이 제공되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같은 문제의식에 기초하여, ‘미디어의 기초적인 정보에 대한 분석’, ‘미디어의 재현 이미지에 대한 해석’, ‘미디어의 재현 이미지에 대한 평가 및 재구성’ 등 3가지 미디어 비평 활동에 기반한 다문화교육 프로그램 모델을 설계하고, 초등학생들의 다문화 수용성에 미치는 효과를 검증하였다. 연구 결과, 미디어 비평에 기반한 다문화교육은 강의식 다문화교육에 비해 초등학생들의 다문화 수용성을 함양하는 데 효과적이라는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 통해 학교 현장에서 활용 가능한 다문화교육 프로그램의 저변이 확대될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 이 연구 결과를 바탕으로 미디어 비평에 기반한 다문화 교육 프로그램의 설계 및 효과적 실행을 위한 제언을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

In recent years, the media's tendency to represent biased images of ethnic groups such as immigrants is pointed out as a problem. In particular, students are vulnerable to media containing biased messages because they receive information on immigrants mainly through the media. Therefore, educational experience should be provided to develop the ability to criticize biased messages in the media. Based on this awareness, this research aims to design a multicultural education program model based on three media criticism activities―analysis of basic information of the media, interpretation of the represented image of the media, and evaluation and reconstruction of represented image of the media ―to verify its effect on multicultural acceptance of elementary school students. Research shows that multicultural education based on media criticism is more effective in fostering multicultural acceptance for elementary school students than lecture-style multicultural education. It is expected that this will expand the base of multicultural education programs that can be used in schools. Based on this research, suggestions related to the design and effective implementation of multicultural education programs based on media criticism were presented.
