첨단 기계 번역의 등장 속에서 인간 번역의 인지적 역할 탐색

국문 초록

본고는 구글 인공신경망 번역(GNMT)으로 대표되는 기계 번역이 인간 번역의 역할을 점점 대체하고 있는 상황에서, 인간 번역이 사고 능력의 개발이나 활용의 차원에서 어떤 의미를 갖게 될 것인지를 탐색하고자 하였다. 본고는 이 주제를 크게 두 가지 연구문제를 중심으로 논의하였다: 하나는 기계 번역의 특징과 그에 따른 인간 번역의 대체가능성의 문제이고, 다른 하나는 인간 번역이 과연 어떤 교육적 효과를 가지고 있는가 하는 문제이다. 본고는 첫 번째 연구문제와 관련하여, i) 기계 번역의 발전 과정에서 나타난 기계 번역의 특징이 무엇인지와 ii) 기계 번역의 타당성(번역의 질 문제)과 인간 번역의 효용성(번역의 속도 문제) 사이의 딜레마에 대해 논의하였다. 본고는 두 번째 연구문제와 관련하여 인간 번역의 인지적 효과에 주목하면서, iii) 이중어 능력과 번역 능력의 인식론적 관련성에 대해 논의한 후, 마지막으로 iv) 이중어 능력이 구체적으로 어떤 인지적 능력을 포함하고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 본고는, 기계 번역이 인간 번역을 대체할 만큼 발전하더라도, 이중어 학습이나 번역 교육이 인간의 사고 훈련이나 사고 능력의 개발에 중요한 역할을 함을 강조하고 있다. 본고의 논의는 인공지능 번역기 시대의 번역 교육의 의미와 역할에 대한 학계의 논의를 촉발할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper discussed on the role and significance of human translation under the sheer development of machine translation, represented by Google Neural Machine Translate(GNMT). To address this issue, this paper focused on two main argumentative inquiries: i) what are the innovative features of machine translation and how such features bring about the dilemma between the quality of GNMT and the efficiency of human translation?, and ii) with what characteristics bilingual competence works as the basic capacity for translation and what factors of cognitive ability are included in the bilingual competence? Having these two inquiries in mind, this paper analyzed, first of all, the developmental phases of machine translation and the characteristics of each phase, and then explained how machine translation has been developed far beyond the drawbacks of predecessors. For the second inquiry, this paper discussed how bilingual competence is related to human cognitive capacities, and reviewed the concrete examples of those cognitive capacities, which are related to the translation skills. This paper’s discussion might endorse the significance of human translation and the role of translation education for enticing thinking skills of learners.
