온라인 환경에서 비판적 사고력 개발의 효과

국문 초록

토론을 통한 비판적 사고력 신장에 대한 연구는 주로 전통적인 면대면 환경에서 수행되었으나, 온라인 환경의 등장으로 이를 활용한 토론과 비판적 사고력 신장의 관계에 대한 연구가 활발하게 이뤄지고 있다. 이 연구에서는 온라인 환경에서 학습자간 실시간 토론이 비판적 사고력의 향상에 어떤 효과가 있는지를 실험적으로 검증하기 위해서 수행되었다. 실험설계는 이질통제집단 전후검사를 채택하였다. 실험집단은 온라인 실시간 토론을 수행하였으며, 통제집단은 전통적 강의식 수업집단과 면대면 토론을 실시하는 통제집단을 각각 두었다. 연구 대상은 A 대학교 교직과목을 수강하는 학생 66 명이었으며, MSN 메신저를 이용한 온라인 실시간 토론집단에 25 명, 면대면 토론집단에 28 명, 강의식 수업집단에 13 명이 각각 참여하였다. 8주 동안 학습이 이루어진 후에 비판적 사고력의 정도를 측정하기 위해서 왓슨-글레이져 비판적 사고력검사지를사용하였다. 이 연구의 결과는 학습자간온라인 실시간토론이 면대면 토론이나강의식 수업보다 비 판적 사고력 의 신장에 더 효과적 인 것으로 나타났다. 이 러한 결과는 온라인 학습환경에서 실시간으로 이뤄지는 토론은 학습자의 토론과정에 능동적인 참여와 자유로운 의사표현이 비판적 사고력의 향상에 기여한다는 선행연구의 결과를 입증하는 것으로 보인다. 이것은 온라인 환경에서 학습자간 실시간 토론이 활발하게 이뤄질 수 있는 환경의 설계와 개발에 중요한 연구방향을 시사한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of online discussion on promoting critical thinking ability among learners in an online learning environment. Discussion is regarded as one proper learning method for promoting critical thinl<.ing. Through the literature review, it was found out that face-to-face and asynchronous discussion was an effective way to improve student's critical thinking ability. But, there are few studies embracing reasonable synchronous online discussion. 66 students from a southeast University in Korea participated in this study. The treatment was conducted for 8 weeks to three groups: One group(25) used synchronous online discussion using MSN messenger, another group(28) used face-to-face discussion and the third group( l3) used off-line instruction \vithout discussion. The research design was pre- and post-test \vith a nonequivalent control group design. The instrument used to measure their critical thinking ability was Watson-Glaser Critical Thinl<.ing Appraisal(WGCTA). The data was analyzed using the SPSS statistics program to calculate the t-test. An attitude questionnaire was also used to identify how the students of the experimental group used the online discussion learning activities. The results of analysis were as follows: First, learners who used synchronous online discussion group had better achievements than off-line instruction group ,vithout discussion in terms of improving critical thinking ability. Second, learners who used synchronous online discussion group had better achievements than face-to-face discussion group on improving critical thinking ability. Tl1ese results suggest that online discussion had a positive effect on promoting critical thinking ability in Web-based learning environments.
