태백산 정암사의 역사와 사격(寺格)

국문 초록

태백산 정암사는 뚜렷한 창건연기를 지니고 있는 고찰(古刹)이다. 『삼국유사』와 『오대산사적』에는 자장(慈藏)과 정암사의 관계를 밝히는 다양한 기록이 전하며, 수마노탑에서 발견된 5매(枚)의 탑지석과 『정암사사적』 등의 자료를 통해 정암사 역사를 잘 살필 수 있다. 수마노탑은 정암사의 사격을 상징하는 대표적 문화유산으로, 2020년 보물 제410호에서 국보 제332호로 승격 지정되었다. 정선군과 정암사는 10여 년 동안 수마노탑의 국보 승격을 위해 많은 노력을 기울였다. 이 과정에서 정암사와 수마노탑에 대한 학계의 연구 역시 큰 진전을 이룰 수 있었다. 이 논문은 이들 연구를 바탕으로 창건 이후 정암사 역사를 종합적으로 살펴보고, 정암사의 사격을 나름대로 제시해 보고자 하는 목적을 지니고 작성되었다. 창건 이후 17세기까지의 정암사 역사는 자세하게 알려져 있지 않다. 하지만 18-19세기 정암사 역사와 관련한 자료는 상당 수 전하고 있으며, 본문에서는 이 시기 진행된 불사(佛事)의 내용을 구체적으로 살펴보았다. 필자가 제시한 정암사의 사격은 ①‘5대 적멸보궁’의 하나이자 한국불교를 대표하는 성지(聖地)로서의 사격, ②자장율사 ‘열반지처(涅槃之處)’로서의 사격, ③문수신앙을 신봉하는 ‘문수성지’로서의 사격, ④계율을 중시하는 ‘계율도량’으로서의 사격, ⑤18-19세기 ’불교중흥도량’으로서의 사격, ⑥국보승격운동 과정에서 보여주었던 ‘지역모범도량’으로서의 사격 등이다.

영문 초록

Jeongamsa Temple in Taebaeksan is an ancient temple with a clear history of construction. Various records revealing the relationship between 'Jajang' and Jeongamsa Temple are reported in Samguk Yusa (三國遺事). The history of Jeongamsa Temple can be well studied through materials such as the 'Stupa Inscriptions' and 'Jeongamsa Historic Site' of 5 sheets found in the 'Sumano Pagoda'. As a representative cultural heritage symbolizing the Buddhist temple status of Jeongamsa Temple, Sumano Pagoda was honored to be elevated from Treasure No. 410 to National Treasure No. 332 in 2020. Jeongseon-gun and Jeongam-sa have put a lot of effort into promoting Sumano Pagoda as a national treasure for over 10 years. In this process, academic research on Jeongamsa Temple and Sumano Pagoda was also able to make great progress. Based on these studies, this paper was written with the purpose of comprehensively examining the history of Jeongamsa Temple since its foundation and presenting its status as a Buddhist temple in its own way. The history of Jeongamsa Temple from its foundation to the 17th century is not known in detail. However, there are a lot of data related to the history of Jeongamsa Temple in the 18th and 19th centuries. In this text, the contents of Buddhist work conducted during this period were examined in detail. The Buddhist temple status of Jeongamsa Temple presented by the author is as follows: ① Status as one of the ‘Five Great Precious Palaces’ and a sacred site representing Korean Buddhism, ② Status as ‘the place of nirvana’ of Jajang-yulsa, ③ Status as a ‘Munsu Holy Land’ that believes in the Munsu faith, ④ Status as a ‘Buddhist seminary for religious precepts’ that emphasizes religious precepts, ⑤ Status as 'Buddhist seminary of the revival of Buddhism' in the 18th and 19th centuries, and ⑥ Status as a ‘regional exemplary Buddhist seminary’ shown in the process of the promotion of national treasure.
