국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 과학적 탐구를 위한 복수 작업 가설의 방법의 전략적 특징을 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 지각의 특징에 관한 J. Tuzo Wilson의 연구를 역사적 사례로 선정하고, 관련 문헌을 수집하여 그 내용을 분석하였다. 연구 결과, Wilson이 복수 작업 가설의 방법을 통해 연구하는 과정에서 사용한 탐구 전략들이 두 가지 범주로 구분되었다. 이 중 가설의 비교 범주에는 설명력의 비교, 경험적 귀결의 확인, 정합성의 검토가 포함되었으며, 가설의 발전 범주에는 가설의 수정과 정교화가 포함되었다. 이러한 결과로부터 복수 작업 가설의 방법이 복수의 가설들을 상호보완적으로 활용하는 것이며 가설의 비교와 발전 과정을 포함한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이에 따라 복수 작업 가설의 방법이 과학적 탐구의 연속선상에 있는 하나의 전략으로 이해되어야 함을 제안하였다. 또, 기후 변화를 비롯한 광범위한 범위의 지구과학 주제들에 관한 탐구적인 과학 수업을 위한 시사점을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

This study investigated characteristics of strategies in the method of multiple working hypotheses (MMWH) for scientific inquiry. J. Tuzo Wilson’s research into features of the Earth’s crust was selected as a suitable historical example for study, and the relevant literature content was analyzed. The findings revealed two principal categories of inquiry strategies employed by Wilson in his use of the MMWH. First, the category of comparing hypotheses included three strategies: the comparison of explanatory power, identification of empirical consequences, and examination of coherence. In the second principal category, that of developing hypotheses, two strategies were recognized: the modification and elaboration of hypotheses. Overall, Wilson’s use of the MMWH took advantage of multiple hypotheses complementarily and involved processes of comparing and developing hypotheses. Accordingly, it is suggested that the MMWH should be understood as a strategy on the continuum of scientific inquiry. Implications of these findings for inquiry-based science instruction about a wide range of Earth science topics, including climate change were discussed.
