부모 사별을 주제로 한 그림책의 애도과정 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 부모 사별을 다룬 그림책 속 인물들의 애도과정을 알아보고 유형을 분석해 그림책의 문학적 가치를 드러내고 독자인 유아에게 줄 수 있는 영향력과 교육적 가치를 살펴보는데 목적이 있다. 분석대상은 유아를 위한 그림책 총 9권이며;부모 사별을 경험한 인물의 사고와 감정의 변화를 중심으로 분석하여 애도과정을 구조화하였다. 연구결과 등장인물들의 애도유형은 다양하게 드러났지만 부모 사별 후 일련의 애도과정을 경험하는 것으로 나타났다. 등장인물들은 부모 사별 후 공통적으로 슬픔과 충격의 감정적 반응;인지적 수용과 내면화;현실로의 복귀와 적응의 순으로 애도과정을 드러내었다. 등장인물들이 부모 사별의 슬픔과 충격을 극복하고 회복과 치유를 경험하는데 있어서 남겨진 부모를 비롯하여 주변인들의 죽음에 대한 설명;사별에 대한 대처;위로와 공감이 크게 도움이 된 것으로 여겨진다. 한편 그림책 등장인물의 내면의 목소리와 정서의 표출은 글 텍스트뿐만 아니라 그림 텍스트를 통해서도 드러나므로 추상적 사고에 제한이 있고 언어적 표현과 이해에 미숙한 유아에게도 유용하게 의미 전달을 할 수 있으리라 판단된다. 부모 사별을 경험한 인물의 애도과정을 다루고 있는 그림책을 읽음으로써 부모 사별을 경험한 유아는 그림책 속 인물들과의 동일시를 통해 감정적 해소와 회복의 기회를 가질 수 있고;그렇지 않은 유아는 선제 경험을 통한 사회화를 도울 수 있을 것이다. 이 연구결과를 바탕으로 유아의 애도과정을 돕기 위한 그림책의 교육적 활용 가능성과 유아의 애도 상담 시 가족상담적 접근이 필요함을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine the type and process of mourning in young children’s picture books addressing parental bereavement and their influence on young readers. The research subjects were nine picture books whose characters mourn the loss of a parent;and the changes in their thoughts and emotions were analyzed. The results of the analysis show that the characters exhibit the same mourning steps;although the types of mourning are diverse. After the death of a parent;the characters experience the mourning process;such as emotional response due to sorrow and shock;cognitive acceptance and internalization;and return to reality and adaptation. To overcome the sorrow;shock;experience recovery;and healing resulting from the death of a parent;it is helpful to have an explanation of death;handling a loss;and comfort and sympathy from people surrounding the characters. Young children have a limited ability to perform abstract thinking;linguistic expression;and understanding. Picture books are an easy and friendly media for young readers. Children easily identify themselves based on the character of the books. Consequently;young children who experience bereavement earn the opportunity to recover and heal;and their counterparts experience socialization through preemptive experience. The results of this study show that the process of mourning using picture books is required for children who experience bereavement to relieve grief and then recover and return to their normal lives. Based on the outcomes of the analysis;this study emphasizes that the educational use of picture books and family counseling is critical to facilitate young children’s mourning process.
