국문 초록

<지장본풀이>는 제주도 일반신본풀이에 속해 있지만, 주인공의 정체성뿐만 아니라 내력담과 결과담 사이의 인과적 개연성을 밝히기 어려워, 해석상의 어려움이 있었다. 이 연구에서는 텍스트 자체의 가치를 인정하는 존재론적 관점에서 공간의 서사 분석을 통해 신화에 반영된 세계관을 찾는 것을 목표로 한다. 본격적 연구에 앞서 주인공의 일대기를 분석하면 Ⅰ초년기-Ⅱ성혼기-Ⅲ의례기-Ⅳ 환생기로 나눌 수 있다. Ⅰ・Ⅱ는 시간이 지배적 요소로 작용하고 Ⅲ・Ⅳ에서는 행적이 강화되어 있다. 각 단락은 탄생-죽음-의례-환생의 이질적인 화소로 조합되어 있다. 단락별 특성을 살펴보면 Ⅰ・Ⅱ에서 주인공은 수동적 인물에 불과하며 Ⅲ에서는 능동적 인물로 변한다. Ⅳ는 죽어서 새로 환생하는 결말 부분이다. 공간 분석은 작은 단위에서 큰 단위로 묶은 것이다. 먼저 공간의 특성에 따라 Ⅰ・ Ⅱ는 세속계 Ⅲ은 의례계 Ⅳ는 환생계로 구분할 수 있다. 다음으로 공간의 관계 양상에 따라 묶으면 Ⅰ・Ⅱ와 Ⅲ은 분리의 공간이고 Ⅳ는 결합의 공간이다. 이 두 상위 공간은 기술적으로 묶은 것이지만, 의미상으로 주인공의 환생에 따라 순환의 고리로 얽혀 있다. 분리의 공간은 전환을 통해 분리가 이루어지며 각 공간별 기능이 다르다. 세속계는 주인공이 자신의 존재에 대해 의문을 제기하는 공간이고, 의례계는 의문을 해소하는 공간이다. 결합의 공간은 주인공이 분리의 공간을 거쳐 도달한 곳으로 죽어서 환생한 곳이다. 환생은 과거 행적의 결과로 이루어진 만큼 분리의 공간과 밀접한 관련성을 갖는다. 이 때 분리의 공간과 결합의 공간은 순환적 공간의 특성을 지닌다. 공간 분석을 한 결과 공간별 함축된 신화의 속뜻은 두 층위로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 분리의 공간에서 내력담은 뚜렷하게 드러난다. 즉 신직의 뿌리를 알려주는 동시에 통과의례의 과정을 설명한다. 결과담은 신직의 속성과 활동에 관한 내용이다. 이로써 내력담과 결과담 간의 인과성이 밝혀진 것이다. 지장 아기씨의 신직 뿌리는 하늘이며, 주인공이 맡은 임무는 의례를 통해 죽은 이들의 영혼을 깨끗하게 하는 것이다. 그 결과 새로 환생한다. 새에 관한 속뜻은 새(鳥)는 지장 아기씨의 화신이며, 새(邪氣)는 <세경본풀이> 서수왕 따님의 화신으로 추정할 수 있다. 이들 관계는 위계가 다른 신격으로 수직적 질서하에 놓여 있다. 지장 아기씨가 맡은 신직의 임무는 사기(邪氣)를 불러모았다가 내쫓아 죽은 이의 영혼을 정화함으로써 시왕맞이굿의 주인공으로 좌정한 것이다.

영문 초록

Although “Jijangbonpuri” belongs to “Jeju Island Shamanistic Myth”, it has been challenging to interpret this myth due to difficulty identifying not only the main character’s identity, but also the causal relationship between the account of her life and the resulting account. The purpose of this study is to find the world view reflected in the myth by analyzing its spatial narratives from an existential perspective that acknowledges the value of the text itself. Before full-scale research, the main character’s life story can be analyzed based on four periods: I. early period, II. growth・mariage period, III. ritual period, and IV. reincarnation period. Time works as a dominant element in Periods I and II, whereas the main charter’s whereabouts are highlighted in Periods III and IV. Each paragraph is a combination of the heterogenous elements of birth-death-ritual-reincarnation. According to the examination of each paragraph, the main character remains a passive figure in Periods I and II, but changes to an active person in Period III. Period IV is the ending part in which she dies and reincarnates. The spatial analysis will be performed by grouping from small to large units. First, based on the results of the spatial analysis, Periods I and II form the secular world, Period III is the ritual world, and Period IV is the reincarnated world. When grouped by the aspect of spatial relations, Periods I, II, and III are the spaces of separation and Period IV is the space of combination. Although these two high-rank spaces have technically been grouped, they are intertwined via circulatory loops through the main character’s reincarnation. The spaces of separation are separated through transitions and each space has a different function. The secular world is a space in which the main character questions her own existence and the transcendental world is a space in which this question is resolved. The space of combination is where the main character arrives after passing through the spaces of separation, namely, a place in which she reincarnated after death. Given that the event of her reincarnation results from her whereabouts in the past, this space is closely related to the spaces of separation. Here, the spaces of separation and the space of combination are weaved through circulatory loops. According to the results of the spatial analysis, the myth’s underlying meaning implied by spaces can be divided into two layers. In the spaces of separation, the account of her life is clearly revealed. In specific, it tells the root of her divine position, and at the same time, explains the rite of passage for the position. The resulting account is about the divine position’s attribute and activity. As a result, the causality between the account of her life and the resulting account is identified. Lady Jijang’s divine position was rooted in the heaven and the main character’s duty was to clean the spirits of the dead through rituals. As a result, they reincarnate anew. Regarding the hidden meanings of the birds in the myth, it can be assumed that bird (鳥) is the incarnation of Lady Jijang and evil spirit (邪氣) is the incarnation of the daughter of King Seosu in “Segyengbonpuri.” Their relationship is in vertical order as different ranks of divinity in hierarchy. In other words, the duty that Lady Jijang assumed was to be enthroned as the heroin of Siwangmaji-gut by purifying the spirits of the dead through calling together and drive out evil spirits (邪氣)
