국문 초록

본 연구는 성소수자 성정체성형성에 관한 Eliason and Schope(2007)의 분석틀을 검증하기 위해 국내 성소수자 청년의 경험을 질적연구방법으로 고찰하였다. 참여자 9명과의 심층면담자료의 분석 결과 위 분석틀의 주제들이 실증적 의미를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 예로, 참여자들은 학령기에 자신의 성적지향 혹은젠더표현이 사회문화적표준이나 또래경험과 “다르다라는 느낌”을 경험하면서 성정체성에 대한 의문과 탐구를 시작하게 된다. 서구와 다른 점은 한국의 경쟁적 입시문화와 동성애혐오 환경에서 청소년기 정체화 작업이 억압되거나 대학이후로 연기된다는 점이 확인되었다. 또한 성정체성 ‘공개’는 그들에게 보편적 욕구임이 분명하지만, 공개 여부 자체가 성장을 가름 짓는 조건은 아니다. 개인의 고유상황에 따른 안전, 자기결정, 소통 등의 욕구들을 복합적으로 반영하여 ‘공개’와 ‘비공개’의 욕구 모두 당사자의 선별적 선택수행의 자유와 자율의 관점에서 존중되어야 한다. 위 분석틀의 국내 적용가능성과 사회복지적 시사점들이 논의되었다.

영문 초록

This qualitative study is designed to explore the experience of sexual identity formation of Korean sexual minority youths for empirical validation of Eliason and Schope(2007)’analytic framework. The themes of the analytic framework are identified as clinically significant based on in-depth interview data with 9 participants. For instance, they started with a feeling of differentness(from social standards or peers) to sexual orientation or gender expression and made endeavors to pursue their sexual identity. The uniqueness of the experience is that Korean adolescents could delay or repress their identifying work till after college due to the competitive exam system and homophobia environments in Korea. Although the need for disclosure is verified as universal among sexual minorities, it is not the requisition to determine their development itself. It leads to the notion that all needs for ‘disclosure’ and ‘closure’ should be understood as insiders’ selective choices in respect for their freedom and autonomy. Transferability of the analytic framework and social welfare implications in Korea are presented.
