국문 초록

이 논문은 신흥종교집단으로 개종하는 과정과 신흥종교집단의 구성원을 상담하는 과정을 분석한다. 이를 위해 이 논문은 우리나라 기독교에 병립되어 있는 기독교 전통관점과 대안관점을 사용한다. 기독교 전통관점은 개신교 중심의 배타적 관점이고 대안관점은 종교와 교파 사이의 평등과 종교 영역과 비종교 영역의 분리불가능성을 포함한다. 신흥종교집단의 개종의 동기에 대해, 기독교 전통관점은 신흥종교집단으로 빠지는 심리적 취약성을 강조하고 대안관점은 보상동기와 합리적 선택에 초점을 둔다. 개종의 과정에 대해, 기독교 전통관점은 세뇌의 과정으로 주장하지만 대안관점은 기존 집단에서 탈출하는 과정과 새 집단을 선택하고 정착하는 과정을 제시한다. 신흥종교집단의 구성원을 상담할 때 기독교 전통관점의 상담자는 내담자를 그 집단으로부터 벗어나도록 설득한다. 이것은 이단상담에서 분명하게 나타난다. 그러나 대안관점은 비종교인을 상담하는 것과 동일하게 내담자의 자율과 복지를 존중하고 성장시킨다. 신흥종교집단의 내담자를 상담하는 과정의 4개 원리를 대안관점을 중심으로 제시한다. 첫째, 상담자의 한계를 정의한다. 둘째, 상담의 규칙과 구조를 상담자와 함께 논의하여 설정한다. 셋째, 상담의 목표설정 및 목표달성과 상담과정에서 내담자의 자존감을 증진한다. 넷째, 내담자의 전인성과 총체적 환경에 영향을 주도록 다면적 개입을 사용한다.

영문 초록

Religious conversion in a new religious group or movement is analyzed from either the classic Christian perspective and the alternative perspective. That focuses on the active agency and the rational choice in the religious conversion, whereas this focuses on the passive surrender and suggestibility. From the classic Christian perspective, motifs of the religious converts are personal vulnerabilities to get addicted to dependence. Their conversion process is the mechanisms of brainwashing or thought reform. Their counseling, that is, exit counseling, is dictated by their counselor’s purpose of deprogramming. However, from the alternative perspective, their motifs are expectation for reward as well as compensatory needs. Their conversion process is composed of their predisposing conditions and situational contingencies. Their counseling is dictated by their autonomy and beneficence. Four principles are presented in counseling with a member of the new religious group. First, the counselor’s boundary is clarified and defined. Second, the framework of counseling is discussed and formulated together. Third, their self-determination and self-worth are respected and encouraged in the whole process of the counseling. Last, multiple interventions are encouraged to take care of their complex needs.
