국문 초록

이 논문은 조선시대의 가정교육과 윤리 문자도의 관계에 대하여 연구한 글이다. 윤리 문자도의 상징과 기능은 조선시대 가정에서 이루어진 윤리교육을 목표로 한다. 윤리문자는 효(孝)제(悌)충(忠)신(信)예(禮)의(義)염(廉)치(恥) 여덟 글자이다. 부모를 공경하고 사회와 이웃이 화목하며, 국가와 민족을 사랑하고, 구성원들 사이에 믿음을 존중하고 예의바르며, 언제나 검약하며 자신이나 남에게 부끄러움을 아는 사람이 되라는 윤리 지침이다. 윤리 문자도의 형태는 일상 생활 속에서 인간이 지켜야할 윤리를 상징하는 문자 여덟 글자와 집안장식의 미술이 결합된 표현양식이다. 대부분 8폭의 병풍으로 되어있다. 윤리문자 8자가 한 글자씩 각각 한 폭의 화면을 차지한다. 각 화면의 구조는 한자(漢字)의 서체와 상징물체의 그림이 결합하여 화면을 구성하고 있다. 형상들은 글자의 상징적 의미를 나타내는 물체의 형태로 이루어져 있고 일정한 기본 틀이 있다. 윤리 문자는 각기 상징하는 바가 다르고 또한 그 뜻에 따라 상징물도 다르다. 예를 들면 ‘효(孝)’자는 부모를 공경하라는 뜻이고 상징물은 잉어, 죽순, 부채, 귤, 거문고 등을 그린다. 19세기 이후 20세기에 제작된 문자도는 문자를 알아볼 수 없을 정도로 형상이 많고 장식성이 증가된 그림이 다수 있다. 최초에 형성된 윤리문자의 교육적 목적이 약해지고 집안의 장식적 실용성이 강조되었기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This study is focused on the home education and presentation style of Ethics Character Picture of the Chosun Dynasty. The symbol and function of Ethics Character Picture lies the education at home in ethical education. The eight ethics characters are : Hyo(Filial piety) , Je(Brotherliness) , Choong(Loyalty), Shin(Faith) , Ye(Courtesy) , Eu(Justice) , Yeom(Honor) , and Chi(Shame) . Living according to these ethical guiding principle means that one should tend one s parents with Filial piety, be friendly with neighbors, love one s nation and people, keep one s faith, be courteous and thrifty, and have a sense of honor. The form of Ethics Character Picture is the presentation pattern harmonizing house decorative art and the 8 characters symbolizing the ethics that people should follow in their daily life.Ethics Character Picture are usually presented on an eight-folding screen. Each of the eight characters takes up one-fold. The frame of each screen is composed of a Chinese character and a picture of a symbolic object. Each picture shows the object which symbolizes the meaning of each character. Ethics characters and objects are unique, both representing different meanings. For example, the character Hyo has the meaning of filial piety and is symbolized objects such as a carp, bamboo shoot, fan, orange, and a six-string Korean harp. The presentation pattern of ethics character shows four distinctive features. Among those character pictures produced in the 20th century, many include overly decorative features and images. This made it very difficult to determine the original character. That s why the existing educational purpose of ethics character became weak and the practical purpose of house decoration was emphasized.
