불교에서 본 죽음과 종교교육

국문 초록

불교에서의 죽음은 언제나 ‘생과 사’의 관련 속에서 논의되며, 죽음의 극복도 육체적 영생으로서가 아니라 심리적 인식의 전환에서만 가능하다고 본다. 붓다는 생과 사의 문제를 인생의 궁극적 문제로 의식하고 이에 대한 치열한 해결방법을 모색한 구도적 삶을 보여주었다. 그리하여 얻은 해답은 육체적 죽음은 피할 수 없지만 생과 사가 본래 없다는 진리를 깨달을 때 인간은 나고 죽음이 없는 참된 삶을 살게 된다는 것이다. 죽음은 생사 속에서 생사를 초월하는 데서 극복된다. 이러한 통시적 시간관을 기초하여 생사의 이해는 삼세를 관통하는 현재의 삶의 중요성을 강조하게 된다. 불교의 죽음해석은 내세 중심의 종교교육이나 단순한 죽음의 불안 해소를 위한 교육의 차원을 넘어 죽음교육의 의미의 새 지평을 제시하고 있다. 죽음에 대한 결연한 대결을 통한 죽음의 초월은 나이브한 죽음교육과는 전혀 다른 생명 교육의 지평을 제시한다. 불교에서의 죽음의 담론은 금기되어야 영역이 아니라 불교의 출발점이며 종착점이다. 죽음을 미래의 사건으로 이해하고 이에 대비하는 교육보다는 현재 자신의 마음에서 무수히 명멸하고 있는 생사심의 극복을 교육의 주요과제로 삼는다. 이러한 불교의 죽음해석학은 현대의 교육과정에서 소외되고 있는 죽음교육에 기여할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In Buddhism, the problem of death is always discussed in connection with life. The Buddha teaches that human can overcome death not by the physical immortality but by the mental transformation. The Buddha recognized death as an ultimate problem of life. In search of the solution, he ultimately attained Enlightenment. The solution says, for those who transform his ignorance to wisdom, there is no life and death from the beginning, even though the physical death of human being is unavoidable. Death can be overcome, when we are free from the distinction of life and death in our normal life. Such understanding of life and death emphasizes the importance of the present life based on a diachronic concept of time, which goes through the three periods of past, present and future. The interpretation of death in Buddhism opens a new path to a broader understanding of death, beyond the hereafter oriented education of Religious Studies or managing of death anxiety in educational dimension. It breaks new ground of Life Education, far different from the naive understanding of death, because death is overcome by resolute confrontation with death. Death is not a taboo in Buddhism, but its starting point as well as its endpoint. What is necessary in Death Education is the proper understanding of death and mental preparation for it, not the preparation for death itself. For death is not a matter of the future, it is important to overcome one s distinguishing mind between life and death. Buddhist hermeneutic understanding of death can contribute to Death Education which are neglected in the curriculum of modern religious and educational Studies.
