국문 초록

칸트에게서 ‘존경’(Achtung)의 개념은 서로 이질적인 두 성분, 즉 인지적 성분과 정동적 성분이 하나의 개념 안에 융합되어 있다는 점에서 애매성을 지닌다. 나아가 칸트의 저작들에서도 존경은 어떤 곳에서는 일종의 인지적 태도로 여겨지지만, 또 다른 곳에서는 감정으로 서술된다. 전통적으로 널리 수용된 칸트 윤리학에 대한 지성주의적 해석모델에 따르면, 오직 법칙에 대한 지성적 인식만이 도덕적 행위의 동기일 수 있으며 존경의 감정은 동기로 작용해서는 안 된다. 그러나 이러한 해석관점은 칸트의 진술들을 단순화하고 일면적으로 독해한 결과로서 또 다른 해석가능성의 무시로부터 도출된 것이다. 이 글에서 우리는 지성주의적 독해의 선입견에서 벗어나 칸트 철학에서 존경의 감정의 고유한 특징과 윤리적 기능을 고찰할 것이다. 본론에서는 먼저 존경이 다른 감성적 감정들과 종적으로 구별되는 ‘이성이 일으킨’ 감정이며, 선험적으로 인지되는 감정으로서 보편성과 필연성을 지님을 논증한다. 다음으로 칸트 철학 내에서 존경의 감정이 세 가지 윤리적 기능, 즉 평가적 기능, 인과적 기능, 교육적 기능을 수행할 수 있음을 밝힌다. 이로써 오랫동안 지성주의 윤리학 모델로 이해되어 온 칸트 윤리학의 다른 면모가 조명될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

For Kant, the concept of ‘respect’(Achtung) has ambiguity in that two different components, the cognitive component and the affective component, are fused into one concept. Furthermore, in Kant s writings, respect is in some places regarded as a kind of cognitive attitude, but in other places it is described as a feeling. According to the traditionally prevalent intellectualist interpretation of Kant s ethics, only an intellectual awareness of the law can be the incentive for moral action, and the feeling of respect should not. However, this perspective of interpretation is the result of simplification and one-sided reading of Kant s texts, and is derived from ignoring the possibility of another interpretation. In this article, we will break away from the preconceived notions of intellectualistic reading and examine the unique characteristics and ethical functions of the feeling of respect in Kant s philosophy. First, it is argued that the feeling of respect is ‘self-wrought’ by reason that is distinct from other sensible feelings, and that it has universality and necessity as a priori cognized feeling. Next, it is revealed that within Kant’s philosophy, the feeling of respect can perform three ethical functions: the evaluative, the causal, and the educational function. This will shed light on another aspect of Kant s ethics, which has long been understood as a model of intellectualist ethics.
