국문 초록

이 글은 예비 교사들이 교육실습을 수행해가면서 확립해야 할 바람직한 교사상을 Mason이란 인물의 교육철학과 교육원리를 통해 제시하고자 하였다. 그녀는 어린이 교육과 부모교육, 그리고 교사 교육에 있어 가장 영향력 있는 영국의 교육자 가운데 한 사람으로 평가되는 인물이다. 먼저 Mason의 교육목적론은 교육실습에 있어 예비 교사들에게 교육의 목적을 어디에 두어야 하는지에 대한 방향성을 제시해주고 있다. Mason은 교육의 목적을 ‘배움을 대한 사랑과 배움을 통한 행복’에 두었다. 이는 또한 Mason의 아동관인 ‘자기교육적 존재로서의 어린이’와 교육원리인 ‘자기교육의 원리’와도 연결되고 있다. 현재 우리 사회는 단순한 ‘지식이나 기술의 전수’가 아닌 ‘역량 강화’를 지향하는 교육을 요청하고 있다. 곧 예비 교사들은 어린이들이 ‘자기교육적 존재’로서 그들 자신을 믿고, 또 그들에게 배움 자체에 대한 즐거움을 지니게 하기 위한 방법을 고안하기 위해 노력해야 할 것이다. 더불어, Mason의 인간관에서 볼 수 있듯이 예비 교사들은 ‘사회 계층과 상관없이 모든 사람들은 동등하게 교육받아야 한다’는 교육적 평등관을 지녀야 할 것이다. 예비 교사들은 ‘어린이를 인간으로서 존중받아야 하는 인격체로서의 존재’로서 파악해야 한다. 특히 현재 우리의 교육 현장에는 사회 계층에 따른 차이는 물론이고 다문화 사회가 되어가는 시점에서 소외당하고 차별당하는 어린이들이 발생하고 있다. 이에 예비 교사들은 ‘모든 어린이는 인종, 국가, 혈연에 상관없이 그 자체로 존엄하며, 동일한 지적 욕구가 있으며 동일한 교육받을 권리가 있음’을 유념해야 할 것이다. 무엇보다도 Mason의 교육철학과 교육원리에서 가장 중점이 되는 부분은 ‘The education is life’이었다. 바로 ‘교육은 삶을 통해 지속하는 것’이며, ‘교육은 생명이기에 살아있어야 한다’는 것이다. 이 말은 무엇보다 예비 교사들이 ‘인격적 지성인으로서 훌륭한 교사가 되기 위해 교육실습뿐만 아니라 자신의 모든 삶을 통해 배우기를 멈추지 않아야 한다’는 것으로서, 평생을 위대한 교육자가 되기 위해 끊임없이 노력해야 한다는 것을 시사해주고 있다.

영문 초록

This article was intended to present the desirable teacher image that prospective teachers should establish as they carry out their education practice through the educational philosophy and principles of the character Mason. She is considered one of the most influential British educators in children’s education, parents’ education, and teacher education.First of all, Mason’s educational purpose theory gives prospective teachers the direction of where to put the purpose of education in education practice. Mason placed the purpose of education on ‘love for learning and happiness through learning’. It is also connected with Mason’s children’s view of ‘children as self-educational beings’ and the educational principle of ‘principles of self-education’. Currently, our society is asking for education aimed at “strengthening capacity” rather than just “transfer knowledge or technology”. Soon, prospective teachers will have to try to come up with ways to make children believe in themselves as ‘self-educational beings’ and to make them enjoy learning itself. In addition, as seen in Mason’s human view, prospective teachers will have to have an educational sense of equality that ‘everyone, regardless of social class, should be educated equally’. Prospective teachers should identify children as ‘a person who should be respected as a human being’. In particular, there are children who are alienated and discriminated against at a time when they are becoming a multicultural society, as well as differences among social classes in our educational field now. Therefore, prospective teachers should keep in mind that “all children are dignified in themselves, regardless of race, country or blood ties, have the same intellectual needs and have the same right to education”. Above all, the most important part of Mason’s educational philosophy and principles was ‘The education is life’. It means that ‘Education is what lasts through life’ and ‘Education is life, so it must be alive’. Most of all, it suggests that prospective teachers should not stop learning not only through education practice but also through all their lives to become good teachers as personality intellectuals, and should constantly strive to become great educators throughout their lives.
