보습학원에 참여하는 학부모의 문화적 논리

국문 초록

본 연구는 고등학생 자녀를 둔 학부모가 보습학원 형태의 사교육에 참여하는 논리를 밝히고자 한다. 연구 목적을 이루기 위해 Lareau(2003/2012)가 제시한 문화적 논리(cultural logic)의 개념으로 현상을 이해하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 우리나라 학부모들의 ‘자녀교육을 통한 자녀에 대한 책임의식’이 다름 아닌 ‘사교육 참여’로 행해진다는 데 주목한다. 보습학원에 참여하는 학부모(이하 보습학원학부모)는 자녀에게 사교육을 제공해주어야 한다는 기본적인 부모 논리뿐만 아니라 양질의 사교육을 제공해주어야 한다는 부차적인 책임의식 역시 느끼고 있다. 이는 기존 집중적인 사교육 담론과 일치하는 부분으로, 보습학원학부모 또한 기존 사교육 참여의 문화적 논리를 인지하며 때로는 받아들이고 있었다. 그러나 다른 한편 자신이 보유하고 있는 사회경제적 자본으로는 보습학원에 보내는 것이 가장 적당한 선택지라고 인식한다. 이와 같이 보습학원학부모는 자녀에게 좋은 사교육을 제공해주어야 한다는 부모의 책임의식과 사회경제적 제약 사이에서 지속적인 내적 충돌과 갈등 과정을 겪는다. 그러나 충돌과 갈등은 방치되지 않으며, 적극적으로 해결되지도 않는다. 다만 타협의 과정을 거친 후 보습학원 형태의 사교육에 참여함으로써 잠시 소강을 맞는다. 보습학원은 부모의 책임의식과 사회경제적 제약의 타협점이라고 볼 수 있다. 이 타협의 과정에서 그들만의 문화적 논리가 구성되고 있음을 확인했다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 본 논문은 기존 논의되었던 교육열 담론이나 과도한 교육개입의 논의를 넘어서서 사교육 현상을 다양한 관점에서 이해할 수 있는 시각을 제시한다. 이 같은 확장으로 우리나라에 명실공히 존재하는 사교육이라는 ‘교육현상’을 교육적 틀 안에서 새로이 논의할 가능성을 연다는 데 본 연구의 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to reveal the logic of parental involvement in ‘Bo-seop Hakwon’, one of the kinds of private educations in Korea. To achieve the research goals, a concept of cultural logic presented by Lareau (2003/2012) is applied to understand the phenomenon. This study focuses on that “a sense of responsibility for children through engaging in child education” of Korean parents, is represented by a “engaging in private education”. Parents who engage in Bo-seop Hakwon (hereinafter referred as ‘Bo-seop Hakwon mom’) have a sense of responsibility for both providing private education for their children as a basic parental logic and even providing quality one. This is in line with the existing researches about concerted private education involvement, and Bo-seop Hakwon mom is also aware of the cultural logic of the concerted involvement in private education and sometimes accepts it. However, on the other hand, they recognizes that participating Bo-seop Hakwon is the most appropriate option because of their socioeconomical limitation. As such, Bo-seop Hakwon mom struggles a process of internal conflicts and discord between their parental responsibility for providing good private education to children and their own socioeconomic constraints. However, such struggles are not neglected nor resolved actively. After compromising their internal conflicts, they just come to a state of lull by engaging in Bo-seop Hakwon. In other words, Bo-seop Hakwon can play a role of a compromise between parental responsibility and socioeconomic limitation. This study reveals that they are composing the cultural logic of their own in the process of compromise. Based on the finding of study, this paper presents perspectives on further understanding the phenomenon of private education beyond the existing discussion of ‘education fever’ or ‘excessive education involvement’ centered on the middle class. This study contributes to novel insight of private education as one of ‘the educational phenomenon’, which clearly exists in the context of Korea.
