국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 도덕성을 보다 포괄적으로 설명할 수 있는 현대 도덕 교육의 통합적 접근에 관한 제이론들을 비판적으로 평가해 보고, 인격 교육 중심의 전통적인 사회화 관점과 구성주의적 접근법 중심의 새로운 관점의 장점들을 통합할 수 있는 가능성을 논의하는 데 있다. 인격 교육을 중시하면서 도덕 교육의 통합적인 관점을 취했던 대표적인 학자로는 리코나와 루스낵을 들 수 있고, 도덕 발달의 심리학과 구성주의적 도덕 교육의 관점을 강조하면서 도덕 교육의 통합적인 관점을 제시한 학자로는 레스트, 데이먼, 블라시를 들 수 있으며, 핵심적인 두 이론의 상보적이고 통합적인 관점을 제시한 것으로는 정의와 공감, 정의와 배려의 통합적 접근을 들 수 있다. 이러한 통합적 도덕 교육의 형태들은 도덕성을 설명할 수 있는 중요한 측면들의 통합적인 관점을 견지하고 있다는 점에서 새로운 도덕 교육의 방안으로서 거론되고 있지만, 이러한 통합적 도덕 교육이 성과를 거두기 위해서는 아직 해결해야 할 상당한 이론적, 실제적 문제점을 안고 있다. 따라서 본 연구자는 오늘날 도덕 교육의 중추 이론인 구성주의적 도덕 교육과 인격 교육을 통합하는 교량(bridging) 개념으로서 “구성주의적 인격 교육”이라는 새로운 개념을 사용하면서 인격 교육 중심의 전통적인 사회화 관점과 구성주의적 접근법 중심의 새로운 관점의 장점들을 통합할 수 있는 가능성을 논의하고자 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to present a critical review of various kinds of integrative approaches to moral education, and then, to explore new possibilities to build bridges across the theoretical chasms between a traditional socialization perspective such as character education and a constructivist perspective in moral education. With relatively more attention to character education, Lickona and Rusnak have sought to create an integrated approach in character education. Focusing on moral psychology, Damon and Blasi tend toward their theories of progressive integration of self and morality in explaining moral conduct. Rest proposes his four component model of morality as an integrated approach to moral education, yet maintains the essential features of an empirically grounded theory of moral judgment development. Additionally, contemporary research has argued that the justice-empathy dichotomy and the justice-caring dichotomy were essentially false and both kinds of theories were compatible with a recognition of justice and empathy/caring as integral aspects of morality. I think it is more profitable for research to be based on these integrative approaches to moral education, instead of trying to chop up moral education into fractions. However, contemporary versions of these integrative approaches to moral education expose some deficiencies in theoretical and practical perspectives. Thus, to accomplish a comprehensive and integrated approach to moral education, I suggest the potential for an integrative view of character education and constructivist moral education, using a new concept of constructivist character education as an integrative, bridging term.
