플라톤 「국가론」에서의 관례와 자연의 관계 문제

국문 초록

플라톤의 「국가론」 제2권의 전반부에 등장하는 ‘큰 글씨와 작은 글씨의 비유’는 정합성을 갖춘 하나의 전체로 이 대화편을 이해하는 데 있어서 결정적인 위치를 차지한다. 이때까지 이 비유는 사회와 개인의 영혼이 동일한 구조로 되어 있다는, ‘구조동형설’로 해석되었다. 그러나 그 양자 사이에는 아무런 닮은 점이 없으며, 그 해석을 받아들이는 순간 「국가론」의 제2권 이하에서 논의되는 내용은 제1권에서 구체화된 문제와 별다른 관련이 없는 엉뚱한 것으로 되고 만다. 제1권의 문제에 비추어 보면, 그 비유에서의 ‘큰 글씨’와 ‘작은 글씨’는 각각 관례와 자연을 가리킨다. 이 가정이 옳다면, 관례와 자연은 ‘중층구조’로 파악될 수 있다. 즉, 자연은 관례의 형식으로 존재하며, 관례는 자연의 경험적 표현체이다. 중층구조로 파악된 관례와 자연의 관계는 올바른 삶과 직접적으로 관련이 있는 정치, 종교, 그리고 교육의 온갖 문제를 ‘메타프락시스의 아이디어’에 비추어 파악할 것을 요구한다.

영문 초록

The allegory of large and small letters, presented in the head of the chapter Ⅱ of Plato s Republic, has an important role in reading the dialogue as a coherent piece. This allegory has been interpreted on the basis of isomorphism . According to this well-known interpretation, city-state and individual human being shares the same tripartite structure, therefore justice in the individual, the small letters, can be find from the justice in the city-state, the large letters. But, on the one hand, we can hardly accept the bold assumption that city-state and individual shares exactly the same structure, and, on the other hand, just when we accept the assumption and interpretation, Socrates such-and-such words stated from chapter Ⅱ on, turn into the irrelevant utterances in regards to the main problem, stated in the chapter I of the dialogue. In the light of the main problem of the dialogue, the large and small letters should be regarded as the two antithetic concept nomos (convention) and physis (nature). If we accept this assumption, the large letters, convention is the empirical representation of the small letters, nature, and, nature is the human ideal presupposed in our convention. In other words, the relationship between convention and nature can be understood as the twofold structure of human life. This viewpoint demands the metapractical discourse in discussing and finding an answer for all kinds of the problem of politics, religion, and education-the core practical activities of human life.
