인간의 자유와 행위의 우연성

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 루소의 한 가지 패러독스를 통해서 자유교육과 도덕교육의 관련을 탐색하는 것이다. 루소가 보기에, 문명된 인간은 자연의 기계론적 인과법칙을 벗어나서 욕망을 갖게 된 자유로운 존재이면서, 또한 그 욕망 때문에 다른 사람에게 의존하지 않을 수 없는 예속된 존재이다(‘인간에의 의존상태’). 이 부조리에서 벗어나기 위해서 루소는 “국가의 법률이 자연의 법칙처럼 준엄성을 가져야 한다”고 말한다. 이 명제는, 사회개혁을 요구하는 실제적 지침처럼 보이지만, 실은 자유교육이 ‘우연성’이라는 조건을 안고 있는 인간의 삶에 어떤 기여를 하고 있는지 보여주는 이론적 명제이다. 자유교육은, 행위들 사이를 매개하는 일반적 법칙이나 유기적 구조가 없는 우연적 조건 속에서 자유롭게 자기이해를 탐험하는 일로서, 이를 통해서 지적인 행위자는 정의롭고 덕있는 존재로서 자신을 연출할 수 있게 된다. 그렇지 않고 이 명제를 실제적 지침으로 오해할 경우, 루소의 사상체계는 오우크쇼트가 말한 ‘합리주의’의 오류에 빠지게 된다. 합리주의는 초월적 이상과 추상적 기법에 의해서 인간행위를 조건화함으로써 우연성을 극복하고자 하는 태도로서, 결국 인간의 자유와 교육을 부정하는 아이디어이다. 인간의 행위는 사회라는 환경에 의해서 조건화되는 반응이 아니라 전통의 암시를 추구하면서 얻게 된 자기이해의 표현이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between liberal education and moral education through one of Rousseau s paradoxes. Rousseau saw a civilized man as a liberal existence who came to have desire getting out of the mechanical law of nature and at the same time a subordinated one who cannot help but depend upon others because of the desire( dependence on men ). To get out of this absurdity, Rousseau says, [T]he laws of nation, like those of nature, must have an inflexibility that no human force can ever conquer . This proposition looks like a practical prescription that requires social reform; however, in fact, is a theoretical proposition that shows how liberal education contributes to human life that has a condition of contingency. By adventure of self-understanding liberally in a contingent condition without any general law or organic system which mediates between actions, to enable intelligent agents to enact themselves as righteous and virtuous existence, is the very meaning of liberal education. Rather, misunderstanding Rousseau s proposition as a practical prescription leads to the error what Michael Oakeshott called Rationalism . Rationalism means an attitude to overcome contingency by conditioning human actions with transcendent ideals and abstract techniques. This attitude, after all, is an idea that denies human freedom and education. Human actions is not a conditioned response by environment of society but the exhibition of self-understanding in the pursuit of intimation of tradition.
