국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 화이트헤드 교육론의 초등도덕교육적 함의를 밝히는 데에 있다. 특히, ‘교육의 리듬’에 나타난 그의 통찰은 초등도덕과교육의 성격과 방법을 통념과 달리 새롭게 파악할 수 있는 대안적 안목을 제공해준다는 점에서 주목의 대상이 된다. 연구결과에 따르면, 도덕적 지식의 의미와 가치를 배우는 일이 초등교육의 시기에 해당하는 아동들에게 어렵게 느껴질 수 있다고 하여 중등교육이나 고등교육으로 미루는 것은 타당하지 못하다. 중요한 것은 도덕적 지식의 의미와 가치를 탐색하는 도덕수업은 인간다운 인간이 되기 위한 지적 모험의 여정이라는 점이다. 도덕수업은 교과에 붙박혀 있는 의미와 가치를 이해하고 해석하는 일종의 교육학 공부의 장이며, 그것은 또한 생활사태, 실천․체험 중심의 인성교육에서는 결코 맛볼 수 없는 리드미컬한 내적 열망을 충족해가는 생기 있는 관념을 체험하는 과정이다. 초등교사는 이해와 해석이라는 그 실천을 통하여 위대한 것을 감지하고 관념의 모험을 몸소 시연하는 현실적 존재라는 점에서, 내러티브와 품격의 구현체가 되기 위하여 자신의 온 열정을 다해야 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to reveal implications of Alfred North Whitehead’s theory of education for elementary moral education. Especially, his educational insights in the content of ‘The Rhythm of Education’ included in The Aims of Education and other essays suggests alternative perspectives about characteristics and methods of elementary moral education, unlike the common ideas. This study focused on the related problems between development and instruction, the meaning of foundation and practice, the methods of moral education, and role & attitude as a teacher in elementary education based on his educational insights. According to the results of the study, it is an unreasonable judgment to delay instruction due to the difficulty to teach the meaning and value of moral knowledge to elementary students. Teaching & learning activities to study the meaning and value of moral knowledge in elementary school is preferably a romantic journey of the intelligent adventure, at the same time with the rhythmic activities of freedom and discipline. If the teacher is stimulating in exact proportion to his success in satisfying the rhythmic cravings of his students in the process of moral education, the students must be continually enjoying some fruition and starting afresh. Therefore, the postponement of difficult content is no safer clue for the maze of educational practice.
