수기치인 겸전론의 교육학적 해석

국문 초록

본 연구는 정약용의 수기치인 겸전론(兼全論)의 의미를 교육학적 관점에서 해석하기 위한 것이다. 교육학적 관점에서 보면, 정약용의 수기치인 겸전론은 교사와 학생의 교육적 관계뿐 아니라 교육과 삶의 관계를 새롭게 조명하는 교육이론으로 해석될 수 있다. 마키아벨리나 한비자는 수기와 치인을 별개의 활동으로 간주한다. 성리학의 관점에 의하면, 수기는 치인의 ‘인식론적 기준’의 역할을 한다. 그러나 성리학의 관점은 치인보다 수기를 상대적으로 강조함으로써 ‘치인이 곧 수기’라는 주장의 의미를 정당하게 존중하지 않는다. 정약용은 ‘수기가 곧 치인이며 치인이 곧 수기’임을 주장한다. 정약용의 수기치인 겸전론은 ‘나를 위한 수기는 곧 세상을 위한 치인이요, 세상을 위한 치인은 곧 나를 위한 수기이다’라는 명제로 요약된다. ‘수기치인 겸전’을 구현하며 살아가는 교사의 삶은 ‘삶을 위한 교육’과 ‘교육을 위한 삶’을 동시에 구현하는 삶의 표상이 된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of present study is an attempt to interpret the meanings of Chong Yak-yong’s theory of ‘co-perfection of self-cultivating and people-governing’(修己治人 兼全) in view of educational theory. In view of education, Chong’s theory can be interpreted as an educational theory to shed new light onto relations between education and life as well as educational relationships between teachers and students. According to Chong Yak-yong’s theory of ‘co-perfection of self-cultivating and people-governing’ people-governing can not be subjected to self-cultivating but plays more active roles in relation to self-cultivating. Interpreted in the light of the Christian commandments of love, Chong’s theory can be summarized as a proposition that ‘Self-cultivating is not only for myself but also for the world. People-governing is not only for the world but also for myself.’Chong Yak-yong’s ‘theory of co-perfection of self-cultivating and people-governing’ implies the meaning of ‘education for life’ and ‘life for education’, simultaneously. Teacher’s life of co-perfection of self-cultivating and people-governing involves realizing that the fact of life are closely related to the self-cultivation and promoting its sublime values to the world and society. His life of embodying ‘co-perfection of self-cultivating and people-governing’ becomes the representation of life to embody ‘education for life’ and ‘life for education’, in itself.
