교육의 내재적 관점에서 본 평등성의 의미

국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 평등의 문제가 교육학의 관점에서 어떻게 다루어지는가, 또는 평등은 교육과 어떤 관련을 맺고 있는가를 이론적으로 해명하기 위한 것이다. 이때까지 평등의 문제는 주로 정치학, 경제학, 사회학의 분야에서 논의되어 왔다. 교육에서 평등의 문제를 다루는 경우에도, 다른 분야에서와 마찬가지로, 분배의 정의에 관한 원리로 간주되어왔다. 이러한 통념에 따르면 교육에서의 평등은 교육기회의 균등한 분배를 의미한다. 그러나 이러한 관점은 교육이라는 실천이 가지는 특별한 성격을 고려하지 않은 채 교육의 바깥에서 평등의 의미를 규정한다는 점에서 한계를 가진다. 교육의 특수성은 그것이 전달하는 내용과 밀접하게 관련되어 있으며, 그런 만큼 평등의 의미도 교육내용—교과—과 관련하여 규정되어야 한다. 교과학습에 참여하는 개인은 교과가 표현하는 가치를 내면화함으로써 참다운 인격을 실현하게 된다. 교육에서의 인간 존재의 평등성은 인간이 인격적 존재라는 점에서 찾을 수 있다. 이렇게 볼 때 교육은 평등의 원리가 작동하는 사태일 뿐만 아니라 그것이 확립되는 유일한 사태라는 점에서 특수성을 가진다.

영문 초록

This study is an attempt to elucidate the meaning of equality in education. According to a prevailing view, equality is regarded as a principle of justice on distribution, and in this meaning, equality in education points to equalize the distribution of educational opportunities among the learners. But this view has a fatal defect in it in that it disregards the intrinsic aim of the education because in this point the conception of equality has no connection with that of education. Now in the alternative view, meaning of equality needs to be described by concepts relevant to education. In this case, the principle of equality is applied to education and at the same time established by it. From the latter, education is regarded as a ‘special practice’. The speciality of educational practice involves the intrinsic values which school subjects convey. Even if distribution is referred to the situation of learning subjects, in this case the word of ‘distribution’ represents the different meaning from the situation of distributing goods. All human beings are equal in that every human being has a personality. School subjects are designed to help to realize the true personality. In this point equality is regarded as a methodological principle to achieve the intrinsic aim in education.
