해저케이블의 지연 현상과 전기장 개념이 영국 물리교과서에 도입된 과정에 대한 역사적 탐색

국문 초록

본 연구는 학생들의 전기장 관련 오개념을 과학적 개념으로 바꾸는데 필요한 경험적 사건으로써 19세기 후반 해저케이블 건설 도중 문제가 되었던 지연 현상을 제시하려는 연구이다. 장 개념은 고등학교와 대학에서 배우는 것으로 힘 개념이나 유체 개념과 다르지만, 학생들은 구별하지 못하고 혼용하여 오개념을 가지고 있다. 장개념만으로 설명할 수 있는 경험적 사건은 학생들이 장에 대한 과학적 개념을 형성하는데 도움이 될 것이다. 역사적으로 전기장 개념은 19세기 후반기에 기존의 전류 개념 및 원격작용 개념과 맞서거나 융합되면서 발달하였고, 그 과정에서 해저케이블의 지연 현상이 중요한 역할을 하였다. 본 연구는 19세기 말과 20세기 초 영국의 물리 교과서 2종을 대상으로 해저케이블의 지연 현상과 전기장 개념이 정착하는 과정을 분석하였다. 연구 결과 해저케이블의 지연 현상은 19세기 후반기 물리 교과서에 소개되었으며, 패러데이와 톰슨의 실험과 설명이 인용되었고, 자체유도 현상을 설명하는데 사용되었다. 현재의 교과서에서 자체유도 현상의 설명에 해저케이블의 지연현상을 도입하면, 학생의 전기장 개념 이해에 도움이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

This research was to introduce retardation phenomenon, during construction of submarine cables in the late 19th century, as an empirical event to change misconceptions into scientific concepts about electric field. The concept of field, different from the concepts of force and current, was misunderstood and students are often confused with misconceptions. The empirical event that could be only explained by the concept of field would help students construct the scientific concept on field. Historically, the concept of electric field was developed in the late 19th century while opposing or combining with existing concepts of electric current and action-at-a-distance and in the process retardation phenomenon played an important role. This research analyzed the process through which retardation and electric field were introduced into physics textbooks, focusing on two printed textbooks in the late 19th century England. The results showed that retardation phenomenon was introduced, explaining self-induction with Faraday s experiment and Thomson s explanation. If current textbooks introduce retardation in submarine cables to explain self-induction, it would be helpful for students to understand the concept of electric field.
