한국과 미국 아동의 감사 표현 발달

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 한국과 미국의 7세에서 14세에 이르는 아동들을 대상으로 감사 표현의 발달을 분석하는 것이다. 한국의 서울과 경기에서 229명, 그리고 미국의 North Carolina주 Greensboro시에서 426명의 아동이 연구에 참여했다. 소원과 감사 척도(WAGS)를 이용해 자료를 수집하였으며, 수집된 자료는 빈도, 백분율 및 이항 로지스틱 회귀분석을 이용해 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 7세부터 14세에 이르는 아동의 감사 표현 발달에서 한국과 미국 아동 모두 연령 증가에 따라 타인의 입장을 이해하는 조망수용능력의 발달로 구체적 감사 표현이 감소하는 발달의 일반적 경향이 관찰되었다. 그러나 주도적인 사회문화적 가치에 따른 차이도 뚜렷이 나타나 한국 아동의 경우 언어적, 관계적 감사 표현에 있어 연령차가 나타나지 않았으나, 미국의 경우에는 연령증가에 따라 관계적 감사 표현이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 차이는 상호연결과 집단주의, 그리고 독립성과 개인주의로 대별되는 한국과 미국의 문화적 가치를 반영하는 것으로 해석된다. 본 연구의 결과는 사회의 주도적 가치는 그 사회 구성원이 참여하는 활동을 규정하고 개념과 행동의 발달 양상을 주조해 간다는 Vygotsky의 주장을 지지한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the gratitude expression development of Korean and the U. S. children. For this purpose, 229 Korean and 426 U. S. children of 7 to 14-years-old were recruited in Seoul, Gyeong-gi, and Greensboro. ‘The Wishes and Gratitude Survey’was used to collect the data, and the data were analyzed using frequency, percentile and binomial logistic regressions. The results revealed that children in both countries showed decrease of concrete gratitude expression as they grew older due to their increasing ability of perspective taking. On the other hand, differences in Korean and the U. S. children were found, that is, the U. S. children were more likely to express connective gratitude as they grew older whereas no age difference was found in Korean children. These results indicate that the features of a culture, such as collectivism and individualism have influence on gratitude expression development of children in different societies. The results also suggest that the dominant cultural values may play an important role in every day activities, and concept and behavior development of members of a certain society, as Vygotsky insisted.
