제주신화에 내재된 다문화 요소

국문 초록

제주도는 바람 많고 돌 많은 화산섬이다. 제주의 신화들은 이런 제주의 독특한 자연환경에 적응하면서 만들어진 제주사회의 특정한 사고방식과 생활양식을 드러내는 맥락이자 문화 산물이다. 이 글의 목적은 이런 제주의 조건을 반영하면서 맥락적으로 형성된, 제주신화에 내재된 다문화적 요소들을 찾아보고 다문화, 다문화교육의 방안과 시사점을 제시하는 글이다. 밭농사를 하게 한 척박한 ‘뜬땅’, 죽음과도 같은 바다를 헤치며 살아가야 했던 빈약한 생산성, 분산된 소유와 평등하고 개체적인 삶을 만들어 준 조각 조각난 토지들은 제주만의 고유성을 만들어냈다. 빈약한 생산성은 자립과 경쟁을 필수적으로 요구했다. 여성이든, 남성이든, 어른이든, 아이든 모두 직접 생산에 참여하면서 경쟁과 다양성, 개체적인 삶을 존중하는 문화가 형성되었다. 또한 내 밭을 살리고, 나이가 들어서도 생산에 참여하기 위해서는 공동체의 협조가 필수적이었다. 개체의 존중과 공동체에 대한 신뢰는 제주의 문화, 제주신화가 보여주는 중요한 테마이다. 협력, 공존, 차이에 대한 인정, 비차별, 소통, 공감, 공정, 나눔, 배려, 관용, 연대, 절약, 정의, 비판, 저항, 자율, 위로, 치유 등과 같은 다문화 요소들을 제주신화는 끊임없이 보여준다. 제주신화는 그 오래됨에도 불구하고, 나날이 달라지는 사회에 맞는 새로운 관계와 담론을 재구성해낸다.

영문 초록

Jeju Island is a windy volcanic land, abundant in stones. These harsh natural environments greatly affected the ways of Jeju people’s thinking and living, resulting in their own cultural contexts and products, that is, Jeju myths. The purpose of this thesis is to find the multicultural elements intrinsic to Jeju myths formed by these Jeju conditions, suggesting their multicultural implications and the effective ways of multicultural education. The almost barren land that only allows dry-field crops, its low agricultural productivity forcing people to go out to the rough sea for their living, and its fragmented farming spaces leading to separate ownership, equality, and individualized living – all these conditions gave Jeju people their own characteristics. Low agricultural productivity necessarily required self-reliance and competition. Everyone in the community – women, men, adults, or children – had to participate in earning a living and this necessity helped to form a culture which respects competition, diversity and individuality. Jeju people also needed cooperation within the community so that they could continue to keep their land productive and do their labor as a productive person throughout their lifetime. Important themes of Jeju cultures or Jeju myths are respect for individuality and trust in the community. Jeju myths show numerous multicultural elements such as cooperation, coexistence, acceptance of differences, nondiscrimination, mutual communication, empathy, fairness, consideration, sharing, tolerance, solidarity, justice, criticism, resistance, autonomy, cure, saving, comfort and etc. Jeju myths still defeats its being ancient and continues to produce new relationships and arguments coping with new social changes.
