불교사상에 친화적인 자연관 고찰: 사람과 관련이 높은 내용 중심으로

국문 초록

본 논문은 불교 사상에 나타난 자연 친화적인 내용을 살펴봄으로써, 사람과 불교를 좀 더 자연 가까이 가고자 함이다. 불교의 환경문제, 불교의 자연생태학, 자연에 대한 종교의 영향, 사람과 자연은 어떻게 관련되어 있는지를 연구하였다. 또한, 경에 표현 된 자연 친화적인 중요 내용 중 일부를 살펴보았으며, 불교와 연관된 자연관의 특징을 연구하였다. 불교적 시각으로 보면, 자연과 인간이 서로 다른 존재로 인식되는 이분법적 사고로는 난제를 해결할 수 없다. 연기법에 있는 바와 같이, 일체라는 것은 다른 것과 연계하여 현재 상태로 존재하는 것으로써, 상호의존하고 있는 상인상대(相因相待)의 관계에 있다. 그러므로 불교, 자연, 사람 그 각각의 자성을 갖고 있는 것은 아니며, 서로서로 연관되어 있다. 즉 자연과 인간은 상의상존(相依相存) 관계이며, 상호보완(相互補完)의 이치에 있다. 그러나 현대사회는 인간을 자연보다 상위 개념으로 설정하고, 자연에 대한 억압을 정당화하고 있다. 즉 인간중심, 물질중심의 가치관이 팽배하고 있으며, 성장과 풍요로움, 끝없는 욕망과 소비문화는 우리에게 자연재앙이라는 현실을 안겨주고 있다. 그것은 지구의 온난화, 대기오염, 수질오염, 토양오염, 서식지 파괴 등 환경 악화가 잘 보여주고 있다. 사람들은 자연을 잠깐 동안 빌려 쓰고 있음을 망각해서는 아니 되고, 또한 자기 뜻대로 지배하려고 해서도 아니 된다. 불교는 다른 사물들에 대하여 공존과 평등을 중요시한다. 즉 모든 생명의 본원적 평등성과 상호연관성을 충분히 이해하고 있으며, 생명에 대한 배려와 인식은 타 종교와 비교했을 때 월등하가도 할 수 있다. 이런 자세는 인류 미래 삶에 대한 긍정정 대안이다. 위와 같이 불교 자연관이 표현하는 최고의 값어치는, 자연의 모든 생명들을 중시한다는 것이다. 불교에서는 출가자뿐 아니라 재가자들이 지켜야 할 윤리적 규범의 첫째가 불살생이다. 자연 생명에 대한 존경심은 불교 경정속의 설화, 율장 등에 많이 등장하고 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to bring people and Buddhism closer to nature by examining the nature - friendly contents of Buddhist thoughts and to approach people and Buddhism more naturally. We studied the environmental problems of Buddhism, the natural ecology of Buddhism, the influence of religion on nature, and how people and nature are related. We also examined some of the important nature-friendly contents expressed in scriptures and studied the characteristics of a view of nature related to Buddhism. From a Buddhist perspective, the dichotomous thinking in which nature and human beings are perceived as different beings can not solve difficult problems. As in the dependent origination, every thing exists in the present state in connection with another and is in the relationship of mutual dependence of interdependence. Therefore, Buddhism, nature, and man, each of which does not have self-nature, and they are related to each other. In other words, nature and man are in a relationship of mutual coexistence and mutual complement. However, the modern society sets human beings higher than nature and justifies suppression of nature. That is, human-centered and material-oriented values are prevalent, and growth, abundance, endless desire and consumption culture give us the reality of natural disaster. Worse environment is a good example, including global warming, air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, and destruction of habitats. People should not forget that they are borrowing nature for a while, nor should they try to govern it in their own way. Buddhism attaches importance to coexistence and equality for other things. In other words, it fully understands the fundamental equality and interrelationships of all life, and its care and awareness of life is superior to other religions. This attitude is a positive alternative to the human future life. As shown above, the best value of the Buddhism s view of nature is the emphasis on all life in nature. In Buddhism, the first of the ethical norms to be followed by Buddhist priests as well as lay people is no destruction of life. Respect for the natural life has appeared a lot in Vinaya texts, tales of the Buddhist scriptures and so on.
