대학평생교육의 운영전략과 과제: 미국의 성인학습중심대학 사례를 중심으로

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 미국 성인학습중심대학의 평생교육 사례를 살펴보고, 주요 운영전략과 발전과제를 탐구하는 것이다. 이를 위해, 성인학습중심대학의 우수사례 중 뉴욕주립대학교의 하나인 엠파이어주립대학교(SUNY Empire State College)와 사립대학교인 드폴대학교(DePaul University)의 뉴러닝 대학(School for New Learning)을 포함한 총 2개의 사례를 최종 선정하여 광범위한 문헌분석을 실시하였다. 성인·경험학습 위원회(Council for Adult and Experiential Learning)에서 제시한 성인학습중심대학이 지녀야할 9가지 원칙에 기초하여 해당 대학들의 사례를 분석한 결과, 두 대학의 근본적 평생교육 운영의 성공전략은 철저한 성인학습자 중심의 철학에 기초함이 밝혀졌다. 구체적인 공통적 성공전략은 크게 3가지로, (1) 고유한, 총체적 교수-학습지원체계, (2) 유연한 교육과정, (3) 다양한 제휴로 요약되었다. 이에 반해, 공통적 당면과 제로는 성인학습자들을 위한 학교차원의 재정적 지원 미흡이 발견되었다. 더불어 교수-학생 멘토링의 부정적 효과, 낮은 졸업률, 사전학점인정의 지연 및 제한적 인정범위, 등록학생 감소 등에서 각기 다른 당면과제를 지니고 있었다. 이상의 분석결과를 토대로 성공적인 대학평생교육 운영과 발전을 위한 시사점을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine cases of adult learning focused universities and further their major strategies and challenges in managing lifelong education. This study includes a comprehensive literature analysis of “the Empire State College” of State University of New York and “the School for New Learning”of DePaul University as the best cases of adult learning focused universities. Using the nine principles of adult learning focused institutions, suggested by the Council for Adult and Experiential Leaning, it was revealed that the universities’ fundamental success strategy is thoroughly based on their adult student-centered philosophy. Specifically, they had three critical success strategies in common: 1) a unique, holistic teaching-learning process, 2) a flexible curriculum, and 3) diverse types of partnerships. On the other hand, the universities had a common challenge of limited internal financial supports for adult students. In addition, they had several different challenges respectively such as a negative effect of faculty-student mentioning, a low graduate rate, a delay of prior learning assessment and its limited allowance, and a decline of student enrollment. Based on the findings, implications for successfully managing and developing the university lifelong education were discussed.
