국문 초록

Smith의 교육사상을 정확히 이해하기 위해서는 그의 사상적 배경에 대한 검토가 필요하 다. 그의 사상적 기반에는 인간 존중의 자유주의와 공동체 중심의 스토아학파가 있다. 그는 개인과 사회의 균형적 행복을 추구하면서, 개인의 이익은 사회의 이익을 침해하지 않은 범 위 내에 한정하고 있다. 그의 시장경쟁원리는 인간을 억압하는 인위적 경쟁이 아니라, 인간 과 사회를 위한 자연적 경쟁을 추구한다. 인간을 위한 시장경쟁원리는 자연성, 공정성, 적정 성, 공공성이라는 네 가지 원칙을 기반으로 하고 있다. 이러한 사상적 배경은 Smith의 교육 사상을 이해하는 데 중요한 논리적 연결고리의 역할을 한다. Smith의 교육사상은 교육적 만능주의, 이타적 인간관, 사회적 공정성, 자연주의 교육을 추 구하며, 공교육, 서민교육, 의무교육 등을 제안하고 있으며 그리고 교육적 능력주의 경쟁, 교 사의 능력급별 자유경쟁을 강조하였다. 그의 교육사상은 인간을 위한 교육, 공공선을 위한 교육을 추구하고 있다. 그러나 Smith의 교육사상은 매우 예민하여, 그의 의도와 달리 역으로 해석될 수도 있다. 즉 교육의 자연적 경쟁원리를 인위적 무한경쟁원리로, 순수 능력의 경쟁 (능력주의)을 형식적 능력의 경쟁(학력주의)으로, 공급자인 교사의 경쟁을 수요자인 학생의 경쟁으로 논리적으로 잘못 해석하는 경향이 있다. 잘못된 해석은 인간을 위한 자연적 경쟁 을 인간을 억압하는 인위적 경쟁으로 변모시킨다. 이 점은 Smith 사상에 대한 철저한 검토 없이, 외형적 논리에 지나치게 의존한 결과다. Smith의 교육사상을 정확히 이해하기 위해서 는 세심한 배려와 신중한 접근이 필요하다.

영문 초록

The examination on Smith's ideological background is needed to understand his educational thought. In his ideological background, there are liberalism respecting human life and the Stoic school. He pursuits the balancing welfare between a person and society. At the same time, he limits personal gains to be no better than social gains. His principle of market competition is not the artificial competition to repress human but the natural competition to consider human and society. His principle for human is based on the following four rules, that is naturality, fairness, propriety and publicness. These ideological background play important connection parts to understand Smith's educational thought. In his educational thought, he seeks education omnipotence, altruistic human, social fairness and naturalism education and suggests public education, common education and compulsory education and emphasizes educational meritocracy competition and teachers' free competition based on abilities. His educational thought pursuits the education for human and the education for public virtue. But his educational thought is so sensitive that may be understood against his intention. In other words, his thoughts tend to misinterpret a educational natural competition principle as a artificial limitless competition principle, pure meritocracy as formal meritocracy and education providers, teachers' competition as education consumers, students' competition. These erroneous interpretations changes the natural competition for human into the artificial competition to repress human. These points result from depending excessively on the external logics without the close examination on Smith's thought. So, it is required the careful concern and prudent approach to understand precisely Smith's educational thought.
