한국사회의 교육적 동질혼 분석: 1966~2010

국문 초록

본 연구는 인구주택총조사 1% 마이크로 자료를 사용하여 지난 반세기 동안 한국사회에 서 교육적 동질혼 경향이 어떻게 변화하였고, 그것이 같은 기간 동안에 전개된 사회변동과 어떤 연관성을 맺고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 자료분석은 통혼표에 대수선형모형을 적용하여 가장자리분포를 통제한 후에 부부 교육수준 간의 연관성을 살펴보는 방법을 통해 이루어졌 다. 연구결과는 한국사회의 장기 교육적 동질혼 추세가 역U자형 곡선의 형태를 띠는 것을 보여준다. 구체적으로, 한국사회에서는 1970년대 중반 이래 교육적 동질혼 경향이 꾸준히 강 화되어 1990년대 중반에 정점에 이른 후에 다시 약화되는 추세가 나타나고 있다. 외환위기 는 이 같은 시계열적 추세에 변곡점을 제공한 핵심 동인으로 추정되었다. 한편 1960년대에 는 인접 교육수준 간 결혼 장벽이 초졸/중졸 간에 가장 높았지만, 이후에 이 장벽이 지속적 으로 낮아져 2000년대에 들어서는 여러 교육수준 간 장벽 중에서 가장 낮아지게 되었다. 반 면, 1970년대 이후로는 중졸/고졸 간에 가장 높은 결혼 장벽이 유지되고 있었다. 이러한 교 육수준 간 결혼 장벽의 시계열적 추세는 급속한 산업화 및 교육팽창 과정에서 초래된 각 교 육수준의 상대적 가치의 변화와 밀접한 연관성을 갖는 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

Using Korean Census 1% microdata from 1966 to 2010, this study examines long-term trends over last half-century in educational homogamy between husbands and wives, taking into account social changes that might have affected the trends in educational homogamy. We apply log-linear models to marriage tables in order to detect the association between husbands' and wives' educational attainment after controlling for the marginal distributions of educational attainment. Our results display the inverted U-shaped trend over time in educational homogamy. Specifically, the tendency for people with the same level of education to marry each other increased from the mid-1970s until the mid-1990s and then declined. The ‘economic crisis’ that began from the late 1990s matches with the turing point of the trend in educational homogamy. The results of the crossing model, furthermore, show that barriers were strongest for marriage between people with primary education and people with middle school education during the 1960s but the barriers decreased since then to the extent that they are weakest in the 2000s. Since the 1970s, the most difficult barriers to cross are those to marriage between people with middle school education and people with high school education. The changes in barriers to intermarriage across educational levels are related to changing values of different educational levels associated with rapid industrialization and educational expansion.
