중산층 어머니들의 자녀교육 담론: 자녀교육 지원태도에 대한 의미 분석

국문 초록

이 논문은 어머니들의 ‘관리와 기획’에 의해 주도되는 자녀교육이 어머니들이 맺고 있는 개인, 가족, 사회적 관계 안에서 어떤 의미를 구성하고 있는지를 연구하기 위해 중고생 자녀를 둔 서울과 수도권에 거주하는 23명의 중산층 어머니들을 심층 인터뷰하여 분석한 것이다. 먼저 ‘교육’과 ‘자녀 교육성공’에 대한 어머니들의 사고와 태도는 어떤 지식과 담론에 기반하고 있는지, 이러한 지식과 담론이 어떤 방식으로 자녀교육의 실제적 행위에서 드러나는지를 분석하였다. 그리고 이러한 태도 와 행위들이 어머니들이 맺는 가족 등의 다양한 관계에서 어떤 의미를 지니는지를 어머니들의 개 인적, 사회적 조건들과 관련하여 분석하였다. ‘자녀교육성공’은 어머니들에게 취업여부와 상관없이 가장 중요한 삶의 프로젝트의 하나이지만 어머니들의 개인적, 사회적 위치에 따라 그 의미가 조금 씩 다르게 구성되어짐을 보여 준다. 전업주부의 경우 자녀교육은 여성의 위치와 지위가 변화하는 사회에서 자신의 정체성 위기를 돌파하기 위한 강력한 도구로써의 의미를 지닌다. 취업주부에게도 자녀교육 성공여부는 개인적, 사회적 관계에서 중요한 위치를 차지한다. 따라서 취업주부에게 자녀 교육은 이중적 역할 부담이자 직업적 정체성과 끊임없는 긴장 관계를 형성하는 기제로 작동되기도 한다. 요컨대 어머니들의 자녀교육열은 자녀들의 성공에 의해 능력 있는 ‘어머니 되기’라는 자신들 의 현실적이고 내재적 욕망과 ‘일류대 입학’이라는 자녀교육 성공에 대한 가족 등 외부 기대에의 호응이라는 상호작용에 의한 ‘정체성 전략’의 형태를 지닌다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The main purpose of this paper is to identify Korean mothers' enthusiasm for the education of their children. The data are based on interviews carried out in Seoul, South Korea. The sample is composed of twenty-three, middle-class Korean mothers who have one or more children aged between 13-18 years. Twelve out of the sample are housewives and other eleven have paid jobs. The questionnaire is designed to find out the hidden meanings behind mothers' enthusiasm for the almost blind investment in the education of their children by checking the priority given by them to the success of their children on the basis of individual, family, and social variants of the interviewees. The interviews have been analysed for the frequency of various subjects mentioned in the course of the dialogue, and the results are as follows. The educational success of their child is one of the most important tasks in a mother's life, regardless whether she has a job or not. However, there are some differences according to the personal and social status of the mother. In the case of housewives, the child's education is used as a powerful tool to overcome their own identity crisis at a time when the role and status of women are changing. For those working mothers, even though their child's education is important, it becomes a double sense of responsibility that can sometimes conflict with their career-based identities. In brief, the enthusiasm for the education of their child is a strategy of Korean mothers to secure an individual and a social position for themselves as capable mothers and a way of responding to the expectation of others on the future success of their child.
