근대적 시간규율의 도입과정과 그 의미

국문 초록

이 연구는 서구사회에서 근대적 시간이 등장?확산되는 과정과 우리사회로의 유입과정을 분석 하고 있다. 특히 근대적 시간이 근대학교에 어떤 영향을 주고, 학교의 시간을 어떻게 변화시켰는지 살펴보았다. 서구사회의 논의와 근대적 시간이 도입되는 근대계몽기를 연구범위로 하여 시간규율 의 도입과정을 분석하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 산업주의는 근대의 시간을 시간엄수와 정확성 에 기반을 둔 규칙적 시간으로 규정하였다. 새로운 시간관념은 사회전반에 영향을 미치게 되고 사 회를 재조직해야 했으며, 새로운 시간관념을 내면화한 근대 주체를 양성해야 했다. 이 시기에 주목 받게 된 근대의 학교에는 산업주의의 시간 논리가 기획?내포되어 있다. 이제 학교는 아동을 규율 시간의 새로운 세계로 입문시키는 역할을 근대사회로부터 부여받게 된다. 산업주의의 확장으로 시 간에 대한 정밀한 분할이 이루어지고, 학교의 시간도 시간표에 따라 선분화되고 연령과 학년으로 의 분할이 점점 더 세밀해진다. 잘게 나누어진 시간과 시간표, 그에 터해 외부에서 주어지는 시간 규율은 정확한 시간엄수가 필요한 근대인의 양성에 필수적이었다. 시간규율은 학교 안과 밖에서 아주 자연스러운 것이며 지극히 필요한 것이 되었다. 근대적 시간의 관점에서 본다면, 근대인은 태 어났다기보다는 시간규율을 체화?내면화하는 과정과 시간 속에 존재해왔다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This research examined the rise of the modern concept of time in the West and its eventual introduction to Korea. Relevant literature and materials, covering the modern enlightenment era when then the concept was introduced, were analyzed in order to examine how the modern concept of time has influenced the development of schools of today. The research findings are as follows. The modern concept of time, which emphasizes accuracy and strict observance of time, came into existence with the introduction of clock time under industrialism. It influenced all aspects of society, including the development of modern school, which came to embody the time logic of industrialism. The necessity of childhood discipline arose in order to meet the demand for disciplined workers, and to instill the importance of strict observance of time, a school day became systematically divided into periods. Each period was reserved for a particular subject, and students were further divided according to their age and grade. Therefore the school served an important function in the industrial society by teaching students the importance of time discipline both in and out of school. However, now in the 21st century, we need to examine whether this model of time discipline is still valid.
