학력 부진 아동의 특징 및 발생 원인에 대한 면담 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 심층면접 방법을 사용하여 초등학교에 재학 중인 학력 부진 아동들의 가정환경, 정 서 상태, 학교생활 등에서의 특징을 고찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 학력 부진 발생의 원인을 분석하려 는 목적에서 수행되었다. 이를 위해 관련 학생, 학부모, 교사, 사회복지사를 대상으로 반구조화된 개방형 질문지를 사용하여 심층면접을 실시하였는데, 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 학력 부진 아동들은 대부분 한부모가족 또는 그에 상응하는 가정환경에서 성장하고 있었고, 정서적으로는 학업에 대한 의욕 및 관심이 부족하고 심리적으로 위축되어 있었으며, 학교생활과 관련해서는 대 개 학습준비가 소홀했고, 수학, 사회, 국어 교과 등에서 특히 어려움을 느끼는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이러한 아동들의 학력 부진은 크게 세 가지 요인에 기인하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 우선 무엇보다 도 학력 부진 아동들에게는 가족해체나 빈곤으로 인한 부모의 무관심과 방치가 결정적으로 악영 향을 미치고 있었다. 또한 이들의 인지능력 및 기본 언어능력도 상대적으로 낮은 것으로 나타났 는데, 이는 일정 부분 가정의 낮은 소득수준 및 문화자본 결여와도 연관성을 갖고 있는 것으로 생각된다. 마지막으로 교육과정의 높은 난이도도 연구대상 학생들의 낮은 학력에 일조를 하고 있 는 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

This qualitative research investigated the general characteristics of family backgrounds, emotion, and academic performance of underachievers in elementary schools. In addition, the causes of underachievement were analyzed. Qualitative data were gathered primarily from open-ended, semi-structured interviews with related students, parents, teachers, and community care givers. The results show that underachievers among elementary school children are strongly affected by factors associated with family disruption and poverty. Many of them have been raised within a single-parent family or by their grandparents. Also, they are more likely to lack motivation and interest for studying, and show psychological withdrawal. In aspects of academic performance, they are short of learning readiness and have difficulties in such subjects as math, social studies, and Korean language. The factors that cause underachievement in elementary school are as follows. First of all, the neglect of parents in care-giving resulting from broken homes are more than problematic. In addition, the students' relatively low cognitive ability for comprehension comes from lacking of basic language ability in association with deficits of material and cultural capitals and turned out to cause the underachievement. Finally, difficulty level of elementary school curriculum is related to underachievement, in part.
