국문 초록

본 연구는 현대 미술가의 작품을 통해 변모하는 박물관이라는 관점에서 쉼 박물관과 호림 박물관을 고찰하였다. 쉼 박물관에서는 제임스 터렐이 뜰 한 쪽에 별도의 건축적 공간을 설치하여 그 안에서 관람객이 하늘을 관찰할 수 있도록 하였다; 호림 박물관에서는 지니 서가 강철 울타리를 설치하여 박물관 공간을 여러 기하학적 형태로 분할한 후 박물관 소장품을 배치하였다. 이러한 현대 미술가들의 개입은 박물관을 단순히 정적인 보존소나 중립적인 그릇이 아니라 동적인 매체이자 테크놀로지로 접근하도록 한다는 점에서 중요한 의미가 있다. 최근 급증하고 있는 박물관학 분야의 문헌들은 박물관의 창조적인 역할을 강조하고 있는데, 박물관이 현재의 사회, 문화에 깊이 관여하는 내러티브, 담론, 이론들을 개념적으로 뿐만 아니라 신체적으로 수행하는 공간이라는 말이다. 특히 박물관 인류학, 그 중에서도 물질문화연구가 현대 미술에 보다 많은 관심을 기울이게 되면서 박물관의 전시 또한 치열한 이론적 논의의 초점이 되고 있다. 현대 미술의 매체로 이용된 두 박물관을 이러한 인류학의 시각에서 분석하여 다음과 같은 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 첫째, 박물관의 공간은 고정된 물리적 대상이라기보다는 바로 그 물리적이고 감각적인 환경에서 구현하는 매핑과 의미화를 통해 끊임없이 다르게 실행되는 공간이다. 둘째, 박물관의 경험은 사람과 사물의 관계맺음으로부터 출발하며 박물관 전시물의 물질적 특성과 관람객인 인간의 신체가 그 경험의 과정에서 중요한 영향력을 갖는 요인이다. 공간적, 물질적 환경과 분리될 수 없는 우리 신체의‘앎’과‘행함’의 능력을 개발하는 데 핵심적 장을 박물관이 제공할 수 있다는 것을, 박물관에 개입하는 현대 미술가들은 시사한다. 인식의 기술로서 박물관이라는 위상에 대해 기존의 틀을 뛰어넘는 가능성과 책무를 현대 미술이 조명한다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper probes into the Shuim Museum and the Horim Museum transformed by contemporary artists. James Turrell inserted a separate architectural chamber in the courtyard of the Shuim Museum, which let viewers observe the sky; Jinnie Seo divided the space of the Horim Museum with her steel fences into different geometric shapes where some museum collections were shown. The two interventions of contemporary artists in the museums are significant enough to prompt us to look at the museum not as a static repository or a neutral vessel but as a dynamic medium and technology. Recently proliferating literature on museum studies stresses the generative role of the museum in which socially embedded narratives, discourses and theories are performed in both intellectual and bodily manners. The increasing engagement of museum anthropology with contemporary art, particularly from the perspective of material culture studies, also takes the exhibition as an intense focus of theoretical discussion. Through an anthropologically-informed analysis of the two museums used as artistic mediums, it can be revealed that: first, museum space is not a fixed physical thing but is being continuously acted out through embodied mapping and signification in the very physical and sensory environment; second, human-material engagements are the key starting point of museum experience in which material qualities of museum objects and human bodies exert a certain power in the experiential process. The interventions of artists suggest that the museum provides a locus for developing the bodily capacities of ‘doing’and ‘knowing’, which are inseparable from spatial and material settings. They shed light on a more open-ended set of possibilities and responsibilities for the museum as an epistemological technology.
