예이츠의 1920년대 ‘동양시편’에 재현된 경계적인 입장

국문 초록

본고는 예이츠의 1920년대 동양시편에 재현된 경계적인 입장을 확인코자 한다. 이 시기에 그는 네 편의 상상의 동양시편 즉 「하룬 알-라쉬드의 선물」(1923), 「비잔티움으로의 항해」(1928), 「모히니 채터지」(1928), 「비잔티움」(1929)을 발표한다. 이 기간에 예이츠는 동양에 대한 오리엔탈리스트의 환상을 반영하면서도, 이들 작품에서 비집고 나오는 틈새를 통하여 영국계 아일랜드인의 경계성과 자신의 분열된 정체성을 드러낸다. 그가 상상한 동양은 여전히 도피의 공간이지만 1880년대의 동양시편보다는 더욱 생기 넘치는 환상적인 과거의 재현이다. 또 「모히니 채터지」에서는 종전보다 더 간결한 시형을 시도하면서, 더 많은 공간을 만들면서 구속감을 덜어준다.

영문 초록

This essay aims to present the liminality of the 1920’s “East poems” in W. B. Yeats. During this period, he published four “East poems,” “The Gift of HarunAl-Rashid,” “Sailing to Byzantium,” “Mohini Chatterjee,” and “Byzantium.” Whileillustrating Yeats’s fantasy of the Oriental, they also represent both his Anglo-Irishliminality and his recurring attempts to resolve his own split identity. His imaginedEast in this period is still a place of escape, which is an imagined and revitalizingOrientalist world. The liminal status of these settings enables him to express hismeditation on Anglo-Irish undecidability. What is liminal in these poems, however,buttresses his playfulness with loose structures and boundaries.
