국문 초록

21세기 과학기술이 사회 변화를 이끄는 시대가 되면서, 사회와 소통하며 현실적 대안을 모색하는 응용불교학의 역할이 더욱 중요해지고 있다. 응용불교학은 불교사상과 세계관을 바탕으로 다양한 분야를 해석하고 실천적 대안을 제시하는 학문이다. ‘응용불교’라는 용어는 비교적 최근에 등장한 개념이지만, 불교는 시대와 지역의 맥락에 맞게 응용되고 변화해 왔다. 초기불교가 부파불교로 분열되고, 이후 대승불교와 선불교가 탄생한 과정, 그리고 다양한 문화권에서 불교가 수용되고 변형된 역사는 불교의 응용이 지속적으로 이루어져 왔음을 보여준다. 불교의 응용은 단순한 선택이 아니라 교리적으로 내재된 필연적 요청이다. 따라서 현대 사회에서 응용 방향과 실천 방안을 점검하고, 올바른 해법을 모색하는 것은 불교의 미래를 결정짓는 중요한 과제가 될 것이다. 오늘날 과학기술의 급격한 발전은 기후 위기, 인공지능, 생물학적 무기 등 인류 문명을 새로운 국면으로 이끌고 있다. 이러한 변화 속에서 과학기술을 공공의 이익을 위한 방향으로 발전시키기 위해서는 과학에 대한 기본적인 이해 및 융합적 접근이 필요하다. 현재 국내 응용불교학은 주로 사회과학과의 융합에 집중되어 있으며, 자연과학과의 연계는 상대적으로 미흡한 실정이다. 과학기술은 자연과학을 불교적 사고와 연결하여 해석하고, 이를 통해 현대 사회의 핵심 문제를 해결하는 데 중요한 도구가 될 수 있다. 응용불교학이 심층적이고 전문적인 학문으로 자리 잡기 위해서는 불교와 자연과학의 융합 연구를 통해 현재뿐 아니라 미래를 아우를 수 있는 보편적 가치와 삶의 모델을 제시해야 한다. 이를 위해 장기적인 계획과 지속적인 투자, 그리고 학제 간 협력이 필요하다. 이러한 과정을 통해 응용불교학은 전통적 불교학의 틀을 넘어 과학 문명 시대에 걸맞은 중요한 학문으로 발전할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

As 21st-century science and technology drive societal change, the role of applied Buddhist studies in engaging with society and exploring practical solutions has become increasingly important. Applied Buddhist studies is an academic discipline that interprets various fields through the lens of Buddhist thought and worldview while proposing practical alternatives. Although the term “applied Buddhism” is relatively recent, Buddhism has historically adapted to different contexts, evolving in response to regional and temporal shifts. The transformation from early Buddhism to sectarian Buddhism, the emergence of Mahayana and Zen traditions, and Buddhism's integration into diverse cultural settings illustrate its continuous adaptation. The application of Buddhism is not merely an option but an inherent doctrinal necessity. Therefore, assessing the direction and practical implementation of applied Buddhism in modern society is crucial for shaping its future. Today, the rapid advancement of science and technology—manifesting in climate crises, artificial intelligence, and biological weapons—has ushered human civilization into a new era. To guide scientific and technological progress toward the public good, a fundamental understanding of science and an interdisciplinary approach are essential. In South Korea, applied Buddhist studies has primarily focused on integration with the social sciences, with relatively limited engagement with the natural sciences. Science and technology offer critical tools for connecting natural sciences with Buddhist thought, enabling solutions to contemporary societal challenges. For applied Buddhist studies to establish itself as a profound and specialized discipline, it must foster interdisciplinary research that integrates Buddhism and natural sciences. This approach should extend beyond the present to provide universal values and life models that address future societal needs. To achieve this, long-term planning, sustained investment, and interdisciplinary collaboration are necessary. Through such efforts, applied Buddhist studies can transcend the framework of traditional Buddhist scholarship and evolve into a significant academic discipline that aligns with the age of scientific civilization.
