국문 초록

Traditionally, direct quotations are understood to reflect the perspective of the matrix subject, while indirect quotations convey the speaker’s point of view. This paper challenges this conventional dichotomy, arguing that Korean indirect quotations, like direct quotations, can also reflect the perspective of the matrix subject. Specifically, it shows that Korean indirect quotations can embed Sentience Projections (SenPs), enabling perspective shifts from the speaker to the matrix subject through the sentient DP in the embedded clause. In contrast, direct quotations embed Speech Act Projections (saPs), allowing indexical shifts. By comparison, English indirect quotations consistently reflect the speaker’s perspective, a pattern attributed to the lack of a SenP projection in their embedded structure. This paper highlights the importance of incorporating pragmatics roles—such as speaker, hearer, and sentient entities—into syntactic analysis, providing new insights into cross-linguistic variation in quotation structures.
