예이츠의 『헤르네의 알』에서 아일랜드 전설과 신화

국문 초록

예이츠는 『헤르네의 알』에 고대 아일랜드의 전설과 신화를 극 형식으로 각색하여 소포클래스처럼 신 중심 사회가 인간 중심 사회로 전환되는 과정과 인간의 자아 완성을 노래한다. 코노트 왕 콘갈과 타라 왕 이드는 헤르네의 알을 놓고 전투를 벌이며, 이후 타라 왕궁에서 열린 연회에서 콘갈 왕은 이드 왕을 죽이고 헤르네의 알과 헤르네의 신부인 어트랙타를 차지한다. 헤르네의 알은 피지배국가가 아닌 지배국가가 갖는 제국의 힘과 왕권을 상징한다. 또한 콘갈 왕은 아폴론 신탁과 같은 그레이트 헤르네의 저주에 따라 바보 톰에게 죽임을 당하지 않고 자기 의지대로 죽음을 맞이한다. 그래서 예이츠는 콘갈 왕의 삶과 죽음을 통해 아일랜드 영웅문화를 재조명하면서 현대인들에게 인간의 삶의 가치를 깊이 숙고해 보게 한다.

영문 초록

W. B. Yeats adapts the Irish legends and mythology into a play in The Herne’s Egg and, like Sophocles, sings about the process of transition from a god-centered society to a human-centered one and sings of human self-fulfillment. Connacht King Congal and Tara King Aedh fight over the Herne’s Egg and later, at a banquet held in the palace of Tara, King Congal kills King Aedh and takes possession of the Herne’s eggs and Attracta, Herne’s bride. The Herne’s Egg symbolizes the imperial power and royal authority of the ruling nation, not the ruled nation. Also, King Congal is not killed by the fool Tom according to the curse of Great Herne, which is like the oracle of Apollo, but meets his death by his own free will. Thus, Yeats sheds new light on the Irish heroic culture through the life and death of King Congal, and makes modern people deeply contemplate the value of human life.
