한국 사회의 친일(親日) 논쟁 - 그 떨쳐야 할 업장(業障)

국문 초록

이 글은 해방 80년을 맞이하면서 한국현대사의 비극이었던 친일 문제를 되돌아보고자 쓴 글이다. 일제시대를 논의하는 현대사의 무대에서 친일 문제로부터 자유로울 수 있는 사람은 그리 흔치 않다. 지금의 친일 논쟁은 먼저 태어난 무리의 슬픔과 나중 태어난 무리의 행운의 차이일 뿐이다. 당시의 친일에는 악의적인 행동도 있지만 생계형도 많았다. 친일 논쟁이 할퀴기의 역사가 되어서는 안 된다. 지금의 현실에서 친일 문제를 해결하려면, 첫째, 당사자와 그 후손이 진심으로 참회하고 용서를 빌며, 둘째, 친일의 댓가로 얻은 반대 급부를 환수하며, 셋째, 국민적 합의로 일몰제(sunset law)를 실시하며, 넷째, 연좌제를 폐지해야 한다. 이제 우리는 친일 문제의 마지막 교훈으로, “망국은 스스로의 책임”이라는 맹자(孟子)에게로 돌아가야 한다.

영문 초록

This essay reflects on the ongoing disputes surrounding pro-Japanese collaboration, 80 years after Korea's Liberation. At this point in time, few can claim to be entirely free from the responsibility associated with pro-Japanese collaboration. The debate primarily stems from differing perspectives on Japan's colonial rule, contrasting those born after Liberation with those who lived through the era. It is undeniable that among the collaborators, some were self-serving and anti-nationalist. However, in many cases, collaboration with Japan was synonymous with securing jobs or survival. Criticism of pro-Japanese collaborators should not become merely “a history of scratching old wounds.” To address this issue, several measures should be undertaken: First, individuals who engaged in pro-Japanese activities or their descendants must sincerely repent and seek forgiveness from the public. Second, any compensation obtained through pro-Japanese activities must be recovered. Third, a “sunset law” should be established through national consensus to provide a definitive resolution. Lastly, the principle of guilt by association must be eliminated to ensure fairness. To conclude, we should reflect on Mencius’ teachings regarding the downfall of nations: “When a nation perishes, it is because it has caused its own ruin before external forces destroyed it.” Addressing this issue requires a return to introspection and a collective effort to reconcile the vestiges of colonial history.
