국문 초록

야고보서 나타난 권면들은 유대 지혜 문헌과 그리스-로마의 권면양식에서처럼 두 가지 상반된 가치(예를 들어, 미덕과 악덕)를 대조시킴으로써 독자들이 따라야할 삶의 모범이 무엇인지를 제시한다. 특히, 야고보서에 나오는 여러 권면들은 야고보서 1장에서 제시된두 상반된 삶과 가치로부터 확장되어 이루어진다. 본 연구는 야고보서 1장을 주제적 및 주석적 방식을 통하여 야고보가 독자들에게 두갈래길을 제시하는 가운데 믿음을 소유하며, 지혜를 구하며, 말씀을준행하는 경건한 삶의 모델을 따르라고 요구한다는 그의 수사적 전략을 보여주고자 한다. 야고보는 우선 1:2-4에서 신자가 믿음의 시련을 통하여 인내를 이루며 온전하여지고 흠 없게 되는 궁극적인 목표를 제시한 후, 1장의 나머지 본문에서 두 상반된 모델을 제시한다. 야고보서 1:5-8에서는 믿음으로 지혜를 구하는 자와 하나님을 신뢰하지 않는 자, 곧 두 마음을 품은(δίψυχος) 자를 대조한다. 야고보서1:9-11에서는 부한 자와 낮은 형제들의 상반된 미래를 보여준다. 야고보서 1:12-18에서는 출생 이미지를 사용하여 시험이 다가올 때 욕심에 유혹되어 죄를 범하는 자는 결국 사망에 이르게 될 것이며, 이는 신자가 말씀으로 생명을 얻게 되었다는 사실과 대조된다. 마지막으로, 1:19-27은 하나님의 말씀을 행하지 않는 자는 곧 자기를 기만하는 자임을 명시한다. 본 연구는 야고보서 1장에 관한 이러한 분석을 통하여 야고보가 제시하고자 하는 진정한 그리스도인의 삶이 무엇인지를 고찰하고자 한다.

영문 초록

The exhortations found in the Epistle of James, similar to those in Jewish wisdom literature and the paraenetic style of Greco-Roman writings, present two contrasting sets of values (e.g., virtue and vice) to highlight the model of life that readers are encouraged to follow. Specifically, the various exhortations in James are extensions of the two contrasting ways of life and values introduced in James 1. This study aims to explore James 1 thematically and exegetically to demonstrate James’ rhetorical strategy by which James urges his readers to embrace a pious life characterized by possessing faith, seeking wisdom, and practicing the Word of God. James begins in 1:2-4 by presenting the ultimate goal of believers, which is to attain perfection and completeness through perseverance in the trials of faith. He then sets forth two contrasting models in the remainder of the chapter. In 1:5-8, James contrasts the one who asks for wisdom in faith with the one who lacks trust in God, described as “double-minded” (δίψυχος). In 1:9-11, he illustrates the contrasting futures of the rich and the lowly brother. In 1:12-18, he uses the metaphor of birth to show that those tempted by their own desires during trials will give birth to sin (leading ultimately to death), contrasting this with the believer’s reception of life. Lastly, in 1:19-27, James emphasizes that those who are not obedient to God’s word are self-deceived. In this way, this study aims to examine what James seeks to present as the true Christian life through an analysis of James Chapter 1.
