개, 우리의 친구인가 아닌가? 그들의 고기는?

국문 초록

최근 우리나라에서 개 식용에 대한 논란이 심화되고 있다. 과거와 달리 개는 많은 가정에서 가족 구성원으로 여겨지며, 이는 개고기 금지법이 제정되는 배경이 되었다. 하지만개 식용 논란으로 미루어 짐작할 수 있듯이 개 식용에 대한 국민들의 입장이 일치하고 있는 것은 아니다. 특히 개고기 반대론자들이 흔히 거론하는 ‘개가 친구 내지 가족’이라는 주장은 논란의 여지가 많다. 이 글에서 필자는 개가 친구 내지 가족일 수 없다는 주장에 이의를 제기한다. 그럼에도 필자는 개가 친구 또는 가족이라고 해서 개고기에 반대할 수 있는것은 아니라고 생각하는데, 그 이유는 소위 식용으로 사용되는 개는 대부분 가정에서 가족이나 친구로 지내는 개가 아닌 비(非)반려견이기 때문이다. 그럼에도 우리가 개를 먹어선 안 되며, 법으로도 금지해야 한다고 주장할 여지가 있는데, 이 글의 후반에서는 그 근거를 제시하고 있다.

영문 초록

Recently, there has been a growing controversy in South Korea over the consumption of dog meat. Unlike in the past, dogs are considered family members in many households, which is the reason why laws against dog meat were enacted. However, as you can imagine from the controversy, there is not a consensus on the issue of eating dog meat. Especially the argument that dogs are friends and family, which is often used by anti-dog meat advocates, is particularly controversial. In this article, I dispute the claim that dogs cannot be friends or family. However, I do not believe that the fact that a dog is a friend or family member at home is a reason to oppose dog meat, because the dogs eaten by dog meat eaters are not family members or friends at home, but non-domesticated dogs. Still, there is room to argue that we shouldn't eat dogs, and I'll make that argument later in this article.
