Inequality persists: Trajectories of social exclusion from middle age to old age

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 사람들이 나이가 들수록 사회적 배제의 궤적이 어떻게 변하는지 알아내는것이다. 이를 위해 한국고용정보원에서 실시한 고령화연구패널을 이용하였다. 대상 인구는 한국의베이비붐 세대인 45~52세(1년차 기준)의 중장년층이며, 분석에 포함된 총 사례수는 1,549건이다. 집단중심 다중궤적 분석을 수행하여 2006년(1차)부터 2020년(8차)까지 14년 동안의 사회적 배제변화를 확인하였다. 집단은 ‘저배제 지속 유지형’, ‘경제/주거 고배제 유지형’ ‘건강/고용 고배제유지형’, ‘고배제 지속 유지형’의 4개로 식별되었다. 네 가지 유형 모두 중년부터 노년까지 사회적배제를 유지하는 경향을 보였다. 집단 간 차이를 발생시킨 요인으로는 성별, 결혼 상태, 교육 수준, 가구 소득 등으로 나타났다. 연구 결과는 사람들이 나이가 들수록 삶의 누적된 불평등이 더욱심화된다는 것을 시사한다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 노인복지 정책 수립과 사회적 불평등 완화에중요한 단서를 제공할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study investigates social exclusion trajectories over time, utilizing data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging administered by the Korea Employment Information Service. Focused on individuals aged 45 to 52 at the study's onset, predominantly representing the Korean baby boom generation, our analysis encompasses 1,549 cases examining changes in social exclusion over a 14-year period from 2006(wave 1) to 2020(wave 8). Employing a group-based multi-trajectory model, we identified four distinct groups: the low exclusion persistence group, the high economic/housing exclusion persistence group, the high health/employment exclusion persistence group, and the high exclusion persistence group. Across these trajectory groups, a persistent trend of social exclusion from midlife into old age is evident. Gender, marital status, and education were identified as critical factors differentiating these groups. The findings underscore the exacerbation of inequities as individuals age, highlighting the necessity of a life-course perspective in addressing social inequality.
