자폐스펙트럼의 차이와 다양성에 대한 존재론적 사유

국문 초록

자폐스펙트럼의 상태나 양상은 매우 다면적이고 다채로워 자폐인의 차이를 온전히 이해하기 위해서는 다양한 학문적 렌즈를 통해 접근할 필요가 있다. 이 연구의 목적은 자폐스펙트럼의 신경학적 차이를 이해하고 인간의 본성을 통해 자폐인들과 신경전형인들이 공존할 수 있는 신경다양성 존재론을 제시하는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 최근까지 실시된 신경과학분야 연구결과를 통해 자폐스펙트럼의 신경학적 차이를 제시하였다. 이를 토대로 자폐스펙트럼과 연관된 마음이론 가설의 내용 및 한계를 제시하고, 사회적 상호작용 및 감각지각의 어려움과 마음이론의 인과관계를 살펴보았다. 다음으로 진화론에서 주장하는 공감 능력, 협력적 의사소통, 친화력과 같은 인간의 본성을 통해 자폐인과 공존할 수 있는 새로운 담론으로 신경다양성을 제시하였다. 개인의 기능과 관계없이 자폐증으로 인한 어려움인 장애에 대해서는 치료가 아닌 적절한 ‘지원’을 제공하고, 자폐인만의 독특한 존재방식에 대해서는 ‘개성’이나 ‘정체성’으로 존중할 것을 강조하였다. 마지막으로 우리 모두는 인지적·존재적 차이를 지닌 신경다양인이며, 신경다양인으로 구성된 공동체에서 공존할 수 있는 삶의 방식으로 ‘상호의존’을 제시하였다. 신경다양성은 인간의 차이를 인정하고 다양성을 존중한다는 의미에서 기본적으로 존재론이다. 신경다양성이 우리 시대 차이를 지닌 모든 존재의 의미를 사유하고 또 다른 삶의 방식으로 존재하는 자폐인을 존중하는 새로운 담론이 될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to understand the neurological differences in the autism spectrum and to propose a neurodiversity ontology that enables people with autism and neurotypical people to coexist through human nature. To this end, I first present the neurological differences on the autism spectrum through recent neuroscience research. Based on this, I present the content and limitations of the theory of mind hypotheses related to autism and examine the causal relationship between the theory of mind and difficulties in social interaction and sensory perception. Next, neurodiversity is presented as a new discourse that can coexist with people with autism by leveraging human nature traits such as empathy, cooperative communication, and affinity, as claimed by evolutionary theory. Regardless of how well the individual functions, autism-related challenges should be supported rather than cured. The emphasis was on respecting people with autism for their individuality or identities. Finally, we are all neurodiverse individuals with cognitive and existential differences. Interdependence is described as a way of life in which a community of neurodiverse people can coexist. Neurodiversity is fundamentally an ontology in the sense that it recognizes human differences and respects diversity. Neurodiversity can be a new discourse that contemplates the meaning of all beings with temporal differences and honors people with autism who live another way of life.
