Timon of Athens deals with conflict on material possessions in society. This allusion is well expressed by the poet's description. Even if the poet speaks material things in relation with male psychology, he derives origin of materials from the Fortune. Then material value exists not only for male but also for female who is able to change the material world. This idea provides possibility for analysis in materialist feminism.
The materialist feminism, which concerns with the lower class in the material society, is different from other feminism which focuses only on standpoint of female. Male can be lower level than female, and vice versa, the materialist feminism puts emphasis on universal equality and fairness of human itself. In that sense, because there are no occupational labor markets for women as compared with men in Timon of Athens, female belongs to lower classes or exists as the goddess.
Even if women are ignored in male-oriented society, the three characters in the work, such as the Fortune, Amazon dancers and prostitutes are related with men whenever they are needed. Although they are completely alienated or excluded from material world, all characters are portrayed as important roles: as a provider of men's wealth for Fortune; as feasts for men's eyes for Amazon dancers; and as sexual destroyers for prostitutes. In point of material feminism, their roles, however, have double image on the whole. The Fortune has both bounty and un-mercifulness with her as a maternal woman. She gets involved in society allowing wealth to men and at the same time shows hard-fistedness by betraying them if men destroy social order with the wealth. Amazon dancers have dual image as a dancer and a female warrior. They dance with men to entertain men's eyes, but such behaviors are only the way for their living. In reality, they hide their intention to expand their working boundaries in society under the masque. The prostitutes also have dual image as a sexual provider and a destroyer for men. They have sexual relationship with men for living and carry venereal diseases to men as a vector of vices. They satisfy men's sexual desire and destroy the society excluded them as well.
From the perspective of materialist feminism, because the existence of Fortune is denied, and Amazon dancers and the prostitutes are degenerated as tools for men's sexual desire, it's distinctly shown that the society isn't formed occupational labor markets for women. Nevertheless, both of them like to get involved in materialistic world as giver of wealth for former and as seekers after money for latter. In that respect, Shakespeare implies how the three women characters are affected by ideology of material world. Therefore it is likely that he had been accomplished reproduction of literature for the reader in point of materialist feminism.
